During these tutoring sessions my goal is to help the student think critically about what steps to take to solve the math problem. I offer three different methods of tutoring and they are listed under class description.

Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
Beginner Level
Welcome to math tutoring! All sessions are completely interactive, with visuals when appropriate. The best way I can assist is by discovering where the struggle is occurring and help them clarify the process. My goal is also to help the student discover the "why" for many of the steps needed to solve math problems, and for them to gain the skills needed for them to reach their full potential.

When a parent signs up for the class, I will ask them to let me know what topic they would like their child to have assistance with. Samples from their homework would be great. I can assist in several ways: 1. Homework Help, 2. Lesson Over the Topic, 3. Sample Problems to Identify Problem Area. Each method is explained below:

1. I can help them with their current homework. I like to use hands on illustrations such as paper folding for fractions, or pictures, to bring a concept to life, when appropriate. We will both be working on the white board mostly, so I can see how they approach it from their perspective. (homework help)

2. I can prepare a lesson over the topic on the whiteboard, Canva, or Google Slides and present it, asking them questions as I go. Near the end of the lesson I will ask them to work a problem the check for understanding again. (lesson over the topic)

3. I can give them a couple of problems over the topic, but not directly from their homework, and watch them work the problems on the whiteboard so I can identify where the help is needed. (It's helpful to see their homework so I can choose similar problems.)
(sample problems to identify problem area)

I will provide feedback to you, the parent, to let you know what progress was made, and if they still need some assistance.

All math topics in grades 1-8 can be covered, including fractions, percent, long division, multiplication, decimals, word problems, ordering all numbers, probability, area, perimeter, and much more.

Learning Goals

Learners will be able to critically think through math problems in order to figure out the steps to take.
Learners will be able to apply critical thinking to other math problems in the future.

Other Details

Learning Needs
In these tutoring sessions things will be broken down into small steps to help those with special learning needs, including ADHD and Dyslexia. One on one attention will assist students in staying focused as well.
Supply List
It would be great for you to contact me and let me know exactly what area of math and grade level that your child is needing assistance with before the first tutoring session, and possibly a sample homework page. That way I can have some additional supplies on hand and save time during the session. You can also choose from the three methods listed above for me to use during tutoring. (homework help, interactive lesson over the topic, or practice problems to identify area help is needed)
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
Paper and pencil nearby will sometimes be useful.

Texas Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
I have over 23 years total teaching experience in the classroom. I have taught second grade, third grade, and fifth grade at the elementary level. I have taught middle school science for seventeen years, which also included a lot of math and math tutoring. I have also worked for some tutoring centers, and online in the past, as well as conducted summer camps at private schools. I currently still substitute teach at times in my local district. My degree is in Elementary Education. I am certified in two states, and also hold my ESL endorsement grades 1-8. Teaching students to critically think through things, and understand the content themselves, is one of my passions. During classes I also like to use hands on objects or pictures to help bring the content to life.
