Class Experience

US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 2

Learners will build fluency with addition and subtraction of numbers within 20 through fun activities that incorporate a variety of strategies. These strategies include manipulatives, drawing and visualization, ten frames, number lines, and instructional games. The intent of this course is to give learners a variety of tools and the practice they need to build fluency and confidence in addition and subtraction within 20. 

Learners will need to come to class with small counting objects (counters, cereal, Legos, etc.) and playdough. Printable activities will be available after the first class meeting and can be downloaded and printed prior to the following class meeting. The class atmosphere will be fun and engaging for learners. Parents are invited and encouraged to participate.

This class is appropriate for advanced young learners (ages 4-5), first graders (ages 6-7), and older students who would benefit from a review of addition and subtraction strategies within 20. 

Week one: addition within 20
Week two: subtraction within 20
Week three: problem solving and fact families

Learning Goals

This class meets the NCTM common core standard for Mathematics Grade 1: Students develop an understanding of addition, subtraction, and strategies for addition and subtraction within 20. Specifically, students will be able to:
•	Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction
•	Understand and apply properties of operations and the relationship between addition and subtraction
•	Add and subtract within 20
•	Work with addition and subtraction equations

I’m so excited to offer this class as both a teacher who is a math nut and as a mom with kids who love math! I am a certified teacher, and in addition to teaching education courses for the local university, I currently teach math to small groups in my 2nd grader’s classroom and accelerated math to a small group in my 4th grader’s classroom. Through my small group teaching experiences and background as a professional educator, I have learned so many great strategies for making early math fun and interactive.
