Math Skills Summer Camp: Second Grade Skills Review

During this four-week summer camp, students will think critically, be challenged mathematically, and practice essential second-grade math skills in preparation for entering third grade ready to interact with content.

 Week 1
Lesson 1
Comparing Three-Digit Numbers
Students will work with three digit numbers in place value models and work from the hundreds, to the tens, and ones to determine if one number is greater than, equal to, or less than another number. Learning Goal: Using place value skills, students will be able to compare two three-digit numbers using greater than (>), less than (<), and equal to (=).
Lesson 2
Adding Together Multiple Two-Digit Numbers
Students will utilize place value and expanded form to combine multiple addends together. Students will combine all the tens and then the ones before adding both together to get the sum. Learning Goal: Students will effectively add up to four two-digit numbers together.
 Week 2
Lesson 3
One-Step Addition and Subtraction Word Problems
Students will learn the 7-steps of story problems. We will learn to solve addition and subtraction problems using multiple strategies. Learning Goal: Students will be able to accurately solve one-step addition and subtraction word problems.
Lesson 4
Multi-Step Addition and Subtraction Word Problems
Students will learn the 7-steps of story problems. We will learn to solve addition and subtraction problems using multiple strategies. Learning Goal: Students will be able to accurately solve multi-step addition and subtraction word problems.
 Week 3
Lesson 5
Working with Time
Students will learn how to read the minute hand and hour hand on an analog clock. Students will learn the meanings of terms associated with time (o'clock, half past, quarter past, etc.). Learning Goal: Students will be able to tell and write time to the nearest 5 minutes.
Lesson 6
Working with Money
Students will learn the value of United States coins and dollar bills as well as how to identify them. Students will solve word problems involving money. Learning Goal: Students will be able to solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies.
 Week 4
Lesson 7
Partitioning Shapes
Students will interact with the terms whole, half, thirds, fourths, etc. when referring to partitioned shapes. Students will recognize that equal fractional shares are not always visually identical within the same shape. Learning Goal: Students will recognize that equal shares of identical wholes do not need to have the same shape to be equal in size.
Lesson 8
Understanding Units of Measurement
Students will observe the measurement of real world objects using standard units. Students will make estimates to the amount of units needed to measure the length of each object understanding that the smaller the unit, the more units will be needed. Learning Goal: Students will understand that different units of measurement involve different size units and therefore require more or less units to measure the same object.

I hold a Bachelors' of Arts Degree in Elementary Education and I have been teaching for the past 8 years. I have 3 years experience teaching kindergarten and 5 years experience teaching second grade. I have tutoring experience for both second and third grade math. I have taught students with varying ability levels including those with special needs, limited English language proficiency, and gifted learners. I am certified to teach elementary grades PreK-5 in Ohio and grades K-6 in Florida. I also hold the certification/endorsement to teach English to Speakers of Other Languages for grades K-12 in Florida and grades PreK-12 in Ohio. 
This class is designed for students that will be entering third grade for the 2024/2025 school year. Students participating in this class should have had exposure to second grade math skills, concepts, and strategies. 
Students will need either a piece of paper and a pencil or a whiteboard and dry-erase marker to work out problems during this class.
