In this one-time fun problem-solving section, students will use divergent thinking and visual patterns to generate different ways to group cookies and will represent solutions using equations.

This is a single-time math problem solving activity. We will begin class with some mental math problems, then we will dive into the puzzle: how many different ways can you find to group and count the cookies in this arrangement? The actual computation skill involved is addition, but we will be challenged to use divergent thinking and will use equations to represent solutions found. Depending on the level of my learners, this may allow us to discuss more advanced algebraic equations. We will structure class time between time to work independently and time to discuss as a group. I will guide students as appropriate to make sure they have a successful time and extend their thinking as much as they are able.
