Math: Pre-Algebra Graphing And Equations Of A Line 3-Day Camp!

Knowing how to graph lines and understanding linear relationships is important for every student. Throughout this class we will learn to interpret graphs and data accurately, plot points, and use y = mx + b to explore the linear functions.

Class Experience

US Grade 7 - 8
This 3-day camp will help students hone their skills in pattern recognition and understanding of linear relationships to help get ready for high school.
Perfect for grades 7 and 8!

We will go through many examples and gain a deeper understanding of graphing, data tables, and discover 'why' all this is important! After lots of graphing, we will then use algebra to find different points on a straight line. Familiarity with the y-intercept and slope will not be essential but may be covered if time allows. By working through problems together students will understand the 'big picture' as well as how to implement this knowledge in a practical real-world setting.

Class will begin with some light review, then an exploration of essential graphing skills. I will provide examples and get the students to work alongside me for different questions. Classes will be fun and casual but focus and attention is a must! We will work hard and conquer the basics of graphing lines. Learners should be ready to participate and work together on exciting problems. Graphing paper, calculator, pencil, eraser, and a ruler will be very helpful!

Class 1
We will focus on graphing and getting familiar with interpreting data onto a graph, plotting points, analyzing a line, and figuring out different x and y values. The information will be presented in bite-sized chunks with lots of examples for students to work through together with guidance. Near the end of the lesson we will discuss the equation y=mx+b.

Class 2
This class will be all about y=mx+b. We will identify the different parts of the equation and then work through many examples to see how it corresponds to lines on a graph. We will do a lot of 'plugging in' of coordinates and students will work on problems requiring their understanding of linear functions.

Class 3
In the final class we will review all concepts and briefly cover slope and y-intercept. We will continue to have fun plugging in different x and y values. Finally, we will tackle problems and may even rearrange y=mx+b to find the values of different variables.

Learning Goals

Conquer the linear equation: y=mx+b.

We will use bitpaper.com to collaborate together. This site does not require any account and students can simple click the link provided. It is an online whiteboard where students can collaborate together and complete work as a class. We will also use Desmos.com which does not require an account. This online app will help us graph lines.

Hello! I am an online teacher with 4+ years experience.

I have been teaching learners for many years in Toronto and abroad and strive to make my classes engaging and fun. I believe that learning should be social so I encourage students to participate and discover together. I love learning and sharing ideas about math, science, history, music, English, and much more. Students are always welcome to ask for help or clarification.

In Toronto, I run a nonprofit providing free tutoring and hope to grow this project to help students in Canada.
My favourite dish to cook is Thai curry!
