US Grade 4 - 7
Do you like mysteries? Do you need to practice math skills? Join me in this 4-day camp, as we learn about adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing with decimals while completing a math mystery. This class will reinforce grade 6 math concepts, give students more practice, and encourage learners, all while focusing on solving a mystery. All ages welcome, but some experience with adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing whole numbers is recommended. Someone stole Puddles the Penguin from the aquarium! Follow along and learn math skills while finding clues and crossing off suspects during this 4 day camp. Each class will begin with students sharing one item, then we will read the case that we are working on. I will present and model the math skill of the day. Students will work together to complete a few examples of the skill. Students are then given time to work independently or as a group to complete the math problems, which will spell out the clue for the day. Class ends with everyone sharing the clue and eliminating the suspect. Most classes have 16 math practice problems to complete during independent work time. At the end of the mystery, students are given a certificate for solving the case! Class 1: Read the mystery, add decimals, eliminate suspects Class 2: Subtract decimals, eliminate suspects Class 3: Multiply decimals, eliminate suspects Class 4: Divide decimals, conclusion of mystery Class structure: Students share one thing about themselves (opening question) Read the case to solve Model math concept Guided math examples Independent work time (16 math practice problems) Discover the clue and eliminate suspects or mark on a map the next location Students will be taught using a document camera, so they will be able to see the math page, teaching notes, and examples during class time. If there is time at the end, we will play either Would You Rather? or Scavenger Hunt Please note: some classes may have extra printables, such as the suspect list or map, class notes (to be used as a reference), and/or the story for the mystery. Classes often are 30-40 minutes long, depending on the amount of time students need to finish their work. This class is an inclusive class and welcomes learners of all abilities, and is inclusive to students with learning disabilities, autism, anxiety, or any other learning differences. It is a small group to allow learners of all abilities. During independent work time, students are able to choose to complete problems together/as a group or to complete them independently.
