Fact fluency is so important for young mathematicians. Simply memorizing facts doesn't always work. This course is a fun way to practice addition and subtraction facts up to 24. One of the games we play has 3 levels - the first has easy facts with the answer up to 10, the second has a little harder facts, and in the third challenging level the answer is always 24. Each card has two problems and a "target" number. Learners have to add and/or subtract to figure out which card meets the target number. For example, a first level card has a target number of 4. The first choice is 12 and 15, which doesn't work, and the second has 13 and 9. Learners have to figure out whether to add or subtract those number to get the answer 4. We'll also play some fun card and/or dice games, depending on learner needs.
Learning Goals
Students will practice fact fluency with addition and subtraction.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Florida Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Master's Degree in Education from University of Northern Colorado
Hello! I am MarySue Gulick. (Ms. MarySue for learners). My journey on Outschool has evolved into mainly one-on-one tutoring. I love taking math further with enrichment activities, and also take learners wherever they are developmentally and move them forward. I love language arts too, and will tutor both reading and writing upon request.
I had a Florida Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education, with an Endorsement in Gifted Education. My Master's Degree is in Gifted Education from the University of Northern Colorado. My Bachelor's degree is in Elementary Education from the University of Central Florida. I taught in both Florida and Colorado for a total of 23 years.
The majority of my classroom teaching was in self-contained gifted classrooms, from first to fourth grades. I "retired" from teaching at the end of May, 2019. Now I'm enjoying sharing some lessons my students and I loved with learners on Outschool! My teaching philosophy is to make sure my content is engaging and fun for students, and they will learn!
Personally, my husband and I have been married since we were teenagers, we have two kids, and we now have two awesome grandkids. We love to camp in our motorhome named Margot, and we spend part of the summer in Northern Michigan, where we both grew up. I am looking forward to meeting your learner!
