What's included
1 live meeting
45 mins in-class hours per weekHomework
1-2 hours per week. Students who want to master the concepts are expected to participate each week by completing the assigned practice questions. I'll provide practice questions with answer keys after each class.Assessment
Because this is such a small class, during the class I am able to spend time focusing on each student. When I feel that extra help is needed, I will include that student to be active in the discussion. At the end of each unit, there is a formal assessment, a test. The test is written online during regular class times. The student gets their mark as soon as they finish.Class Experience
US Grade 6
In this small class, students do grade 6 level math. I help students see themselves as confident and competent mathematicians who are able to apply their math knowledge both in and out of the classroom. We focus on building confidence with a mathematical toolkit, conceptual understanding, learning strategies and reasoning skills. I expect students to come to class with videos on, pencils and handouts (or a notebook) ready! I assign home practice after each class. Those students who want to master the concepts will want to complete this work each week. It will take about 1-2 hours per week. After each unit, there is a formal assessment. Students will write a test online and they get their mark immediately after completing it. We will follow the Fishtank Learning curriculum (from an extremely successful Massachusetts charter school) which is rigorous and problem-based. This program has an excellent track record of preparing students for college and beyond. Our lessons are divided into eight units: Unit 1 Understanding and Representing Ratios Unit 2 Unit Rates and Percent Unit 3 Multidigit and Fraction Computation Unit 4 Rational Numbers Unit 5 Numerical and Algebraic Expressions Unit 6 Equations and Inequalities Unit 7 Geometry Unit 8 Statistics Structure of Classes: - students build community through discussion of non-math topic - learn new concept - practice concept with teacher - work individually on problem set questions - homework practice provided after class Class Interaction: - Teacher and students share an interactive white board - Guided notes may be provided for each class, just prior to the session - Handouts with problem sets and answer keys are provided after each class - Students are encouraged to participate and write on the interactive whiteboard
Learning Goals
Students will learn and/or review important math concepts taught in grade 6.
