Beginner - Advanced Level
Meaningful work with number sense builds confidence and numerical fluency, and it's even better if it's done with games! This class is structured to provide meaningful math practice and review through hands-on, interactive games and oral skip counting practice with multiples. I use a second camera to show my table so that the learners can use their math tools while I use mine. We start class with individual practice with multiples (classmates are welcome to "whisper count" along with friends or mute to count out loud with them) using a slideshow. Then, we play a variety of games (tailored to learners' needs and interests) like Guess My Number, Greatest/Least Number, Student Versus Teacher, Break the Bank, and more. The focus of this class is on number sense, but we will also review basic skills, reasoning skills, and use higher level thinking. For example, in "Guess My Number" students take turns asking "yes or no" questions to eliminate numbers with the goal of finding the my "secret number" in ten questions or less. They have to think critically to eliminate many numbers at one time to guess the number in time! I have a Montessori background, so there is often a Montessori-inspired twist to what we do. Students may stay on an ongoing basis to play games with their friends weekly or can drop in just for a week as they have time. Students may find it useful to have basic hands-on supplies, like counters close by. Students work together and gain social skills as they engage and converse about mathematics together! Students are expected to display appropriate "sportsmanship" and treat each other kindly, win or lose, which is modeled in class. We work together to build confidence, learn important math skills, and have fun!

Skip counting is always individualized. Students start with easier multiples and then can progress to more challenging ones. The class often votes on a game together but sample weeks look like this:
