Kids spend so much time in school solving computation problems, memorizing algorithms, and double-checking their work, but rarely get time to dive in to rich discussion of mind-blowing mathematical concepts! My goal with this class is to inspire a love of math in all my students. Each week we will dive into a different math idea, puzzle or history tid-bit. During our Zoom meetings, I will sometimes share short articles, puzzles and videos through the third-party application PearDeck to guide our weekly conversations. PearDeck is an easy-to-use, interactive slideshow program that allows students to engage with teacher-created slides through drawing, typing, dragging icons, and more. When we use this fun program, I will send students to the same link each time (joinpd.com) where they will type in a unique class code to join the lesson's slideshow. Please find below an outline of topics for the first few weeks of class! Week of August 11th: Really Big Numbers Week of August 18th: TBD

I use the third-party application Pear Deck frequently in my lessons. Pear Deck is a program that allows learners to interact with the teacher's slides by drawing on them, dragging icons, answering questions, and more. Pear Deck is easy to use and easy to access. During our Zoom meeting, I will put a link to the slides in the Zoom chat. Students will click on it and instantly have access. Students may need an email address to access the Pear Deck slides, but it will not be visible to other learners.
We will also occasionally use Gimkit, a game-style quiz for newly acquired knowledge.

Bachelor's Degree in Education from Western Washington University
Greetings! My name is Ms. Hobson, and I'm a Washington state certified educator. I am a private tutor specializing in dyslexia, K-8 math and science. I've taught a wide range of ages in K-8 public schools for many years, and have experience working one-on-one with students who have dyslexia or struggle with reading for other reasons. After using a variety of assessments to diagnose the source of the problem, I then design a personalized course of evidence-based instruction to support each child's growth. I am proud to say that I have worked with several students who have made multiple years' worth of reading growth in a single school year with my guidance!
I believe that all children can succeed, and that hard work is more determinative of success than supposedly innate ability levels. Everyone's brain works a little differently, and I work with each child individually to design methods of instruction that work for them.
When I'm not teaching, I enjoy a variety of hobbies with my family: legos, chickens, reading for pleasure, hiking, cooking, and more!
