I will begin class with a mini lesson, which will focus both on how to play the game and the mathematical reasoning that the game engages. For example, it is excellent at developing algebraic reasoning as players identify what possibilities could complete a given set. Set is a visual perception and reasoning game. Players use four categories to determine sets of three. As in my other math games, this one gets more and more fun the more you play. This class can be repeated if students would like to play more. Set helps students build their visual perception and discrimination, use logical reasoning to find sets, and clearly communicate their rationale. This game is excellent at building a learner’s algebraic reasoning and giving a concrete visual model of “variables” without numeric value. The thinking that develops translates well to higher levels of math. Because the game is visual in nature with no numbers, it can be a beneficial experience for students who feel less confident about math.
Learning Goals
Students will use visual problem solving to determine which three cards on the board make a set, using four categories: shape, color, number, and shading.
Students will learn to predict what is needed to complete a set given two of the three cards.
Students will formulate informal proofs (such as: I see these two parts of a set, therefore I must look for this part.)

Teacher expertise and credentials
Math is fun! Don't believe me? Give Set, a visual problem solving game, a try!
I taught full-time for sixteen years, and math is one of my favorite subjects! I excel in teaching thinking, problem solving, and pattern finding. I believe in providing for play, discussion, and materials you can hold and move in math. I have a Masters of Special Education of Academically and Intellectually Gifted Students, and taught in a magnet school for gifted students for eight years. This means I am an expert at challenging students, delving deep into topics, and helping those for whom math isn't their greatest strength. This class is a great way to grow an algebraic mind and prepare for predicting and formulating proofs at higher levels of mathematics.
