Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
Do you want more practice in math for your high school chemistry and physics classes? Or do you have a budding young scientist who loves math and science and wants to deepen their understanding of these subjects? Then you may be interested in my 2-course series, where we practice how to complete unit conversions, dimensional analysis, and manipulate algebraic equations while reporting the answers to the correct number of significant figures, including with scientific notation. This course is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in the math skills they need to excel in science.

Each class is a standalone course and can be taken individually. It also does not matter which course you take first. This makes it possible for you to take the one that you need the most or both to get the most out of the series.

Topics covered in this class: Algebraic Equations and Manipulations
-Algebraic Equations: Building confidence in handling algebraic expressions relevant to chemistry and physics.
-Algebraic Manipulations: Understanding how to solve equations, rearrange formulas, and tackle word problems.
-Carrying Units: Learning the crucial skill of carrying units through algebraic operations.
-Practice: Practice problems and opportunities to solidify algebraic problem-solving proficiency.

Topics covered in the other class: Sig Figs, Sci Notation, and Unit Conversions
-Significant Figures: Understanding the rules of significant figures and how to apply them in calculations.
-Scientific Notation: Grasping the concept of scientific notation and how to use it in scientific measurements.
-Unit Conversions: Learning essential techniques to convert units and solve real-world problems.
-Dimensional Analysis: Mastering this powerful method for solving complex chemistry and physics questions.
-Practice: Engaging exercises and problem-solving to reinforce the concepts learned.

My conversational teaching style engages each student and encourages active participation. By focusing on practice and repetition, we aim to instill a deep understanding of the specific math skills essential for success in high school chemistry and physics. My goal is to provide students with a strong mathematical foundation that will serve them throughout their scientific journey.

Learning Goals

Learners will have a solid foundation in the fundamental math skills used in chemistry and physics.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
I use Google Slides and Google Jamboard for drag-and-drop, labeling, and other interactive activities that I create. These activities allow students to engage with the concepts in a conceptual way, providing the foundation for key concepts. I will provide a paper alternative for assignments that will require printing, cutting, and sorting in some manner. I use Google Docs for the guided notes that accompany the presentations. This format provides a way for students to complete the notes online if they prefer. A Google Account will be needed to access the interactive activities and Google Docs.
Supply List
Learners will need
- a preferred way to take notes, such as Word Dos, Google Docs, or notebook
- a pen or pencil (if writing notes)
- a scientific calculator
- access to a Google account, since some of the activities will use Google Slides or JamBoard.
