Class Experience

Students will be taught this lesson through an interactive PowerPoint lesson which includes even/odd mystery detective games that motivate students to give reasonings for their findings.

1. Students will be asked what they think "odd" or "even" numbers are. Students will be called on to share answers. (5-6 minutes)
2. Students will be introduced to how an even number is a number that can be divided into two equal groups. An odd number is a number that cannot be divided into two equal groups because there is always one left out. (5-6 minutes)
3. Students will next be introduced to odd and even word problems of friends. Students will be presented with two friends. "Jim and Jill are going to gymnastics. Pam decides to join them. The gym says you can only have one extra person to come with you. Is this possible in this scenario? Why or why not? Students will be given a couple of minutes to think about this. (5-6 minutes)
4. Students will be asked 'Who is alone? Who doesn't have a friend?' Who is the odd one out? How many friends can you see? So do you think three is an odd number or an even number? (5-6 minutes)
5. I will now present students with math detective problems. Students will be told that they are detectives and they must figure out whether numbers are odd and even and to give reasoning. (5-6 minutes)
6. Students will be asked to find an odd number of their favorite items in their house and present it, as well as later even numbers of items. (5-6 minutes)
7. Students will overview the definition and concept of even and odd numbers and share takeaways from today's lesson. (5-6 minutes)
Learning Goals
