Class experience

US Grade 4
Students will become proficient at the fourth-grade level in the following mathematical areas: Place value concepts (whole numbers up to one million); Factors, multiples, and patterns; Whole-number multiplication and division; fraction equivalence and comparison; fractions operations; perimeter and area; angles; metric and customary measurement; representing and interpreting data in line plots and stem-and-leaf plots (using median, mode, and range); and relating fractions, decimals, and money.
I have a Master's degree in Education from the University of Central Florida and am licensed to teach various subjects in Florida for grades K through 12. I have taught math to upper-elementary students for the majority of my 24 years in education.
Homework Offered
Learners will be offered an optional homework assignment after every meeting. After completing the assignment, learners can check their work on the class page and view video explanations of any answers they got wrong. As the homework is self-directed, learners who opt-in for assessments and grading will be assumed to be completing all homework and will be graded at 100% in the individual gradebook.
1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Assessments will be offered every three to four weeks depending on the content. During the first few weeks of the class parents who will have the ability to opt-in for assessments and grades, and must make the decision before the first test. Parents can always opt-out of assessments and grades if they find it is the wrong choice for their learner. No one may opt-in for assessments and grades after the date of the first assessment. Please note: All parents will be sent every assessment to use at their convenience no matter what assessment option they choose.
Grades Offered
Grades are provided at the request of the parents. If a parent chooses to opt-in for assessments and grades, they will have access to an individual gradebook throughout the course. The gradebook will track homework, quizzes, tests, and the cumulative exam. If the parent chooses not to opt-in, they are welcome to track student progress however they choose. The interactive notebook is designed to serve as a portfolio to demonstrate student progress and academic growth should a family not opt-in for assessments and grades. Certificates of course completion will be awarded to each learner. Certificates will be signed by the instructor and include his Florida Department of Education certificate number. Certificates of learners who opt-in for assessments and grades will include the final grade and will be accompanied by a PDF of the learner's individual gradebook as well as a list of the standards covered, all presented in a format suitable for examination by homeschool evaluators. All grades are recorded as both a percent and a letter grade.
Learners should have passed a standard Third Grade math class in order to get the most out this Fifth Grade experience. Knowing multiplication facts to 12 will benefit learners greatly.
A one-page handout will be provided before the first session.
