Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
This Ongoing class is a "Fun Math Camp". We will review several different topics and concepts for learners doing Mathematical curriculum for most 5th through 8th grade. The best part is how the concepts are presented - in puzzle form. It's a fun way to think through equations using pictures instead of just numbers.
I strongly encourage participation and discussion. Learners will have the opportunity to explain how they came about their conclusions, and sometimes we'll find more than one answer and more than one way to determine an answer.
Each week I'll be covering a different topic, and each day we will be doing 5 or more puzzle problems. Join in for the concepts you want to review.
      Order of Operations Aug 8/10
      Fractions and Decimals Aug 15/17
      Negative Numbers Aug 22/24
Riddles and Brain Teasers Aug 29/31

Learning Goals

Over the next several weeks, students will be practicing the following concepts: order of operations, fractions and decimals, negative numbers, multiplication tables, and area models - all with fun pictures. The Riddles and Brain Teasers provide a lot of discussion, problem solving skills and critical thinking.

I'm Mrs. Essmeier, and I love teaching Mathematics. There are so many wonderful patterns to discover with numbers. Understanding why you use certain equations and how these concepts work is an important part of mathematics. My objective is to help my students to understand the connection between the math they learn and the real world in which they live. Mathematics is something you will use every day in one way or another. The more you know and understand, the more you will use.

I provide one on one tutoring for one, two, or three days for one week or ongoing. My tutoring includes the topics found in the curricula for most 6th through 10th grades - number sense, equations, functions, graphing, geometry, fractions, decimals, and more.
I teach Monday - Friday. Please contact me to request times (include time zone) and days available.

I retired from teaching school after 39 years, but I'm not tired of teaching. I've been on Outschool since the fall of 2020. My various degrees include a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education, a Masters degree in Mathematics Education, a Math Specialist enhanced level 2, and an ESL endorsement. My teaching experiences include grades 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th for 30 years. I then moved to the middle school and taught 7th and 8th grade for nine years.
I do hope to help many more learners understand and appreciation the beauty and need for mathematics.
