US Grade 5 - 6
In this 6th grade math course, students will learn, review and practice all crucial and required topics of 5th grade and 6th grade fractions and fraction operations, including adding fractions, subtracting fractions, multiplying fractions, improper fractions, equivalent fractions, mixed numbers, unlike denominators, estimating fractions, whole numbers, scaling, comparing and estimating. At the beginning of class, the students and teacher will have a discussion about the topic(s) of the week so the teacher can assess the students’ prior knowledge of the subject. Throughout the class, the teacher will introduce and teach the topic(s) using the “I Do, We Do, You Do” method. This instructional method starts with the teacher giving an example, followed by the teacher and student solving a problem or completing a task together, then finally, the student is given a problem or task to complete on his/her own, with support given as necessary. All classes will include instruction, practice and application problems (word problems). Homework and review material will be provided after class, but it is optional. Because each class builds upon the previous one, students must enroll at the beginning of the course and attend all classes in order to master the topics of the class. Here is the schedule for this course: Fraction Operations Week 1 - Add and Subtract Fractions with the Same Denominator Week 2 - Add and Subtract and Mixed Numbers with the Same Denominator Week 3 - Add and Subtract Mixed Numbers with the Same Denominator Week 4 - Add and Subtract Fractions with Unlike Denominators Week 5 - Word Problems / Practice Class Week 6 - Add and Subtract Mixed Numbers and Fractions with Unlike Denominators Week 7 - Add and Subtract Mixed Numbers with Unlike Denominators Week 8 - Word Problems / Practice Class Week 9 - Estimate Fraction Sums Week 10 - Multiply Whole Number by a Fraction Week 11 - Multiply Fractions Week 12- Multiply Mixed Numbers Week 13 - Word Problems: Fraction Multiplication Week 14 - Fraction Multiplication as Scaling Week 15 - Fraction Multiplication: Compare and Estimate Week 16 - Fraction Review Throughout the entire class, many discussion questions will be asked in order to promote critical thinking, to help the students to relate to the lesson and to introduce each topic within the lesson. This class is best for any student ages 9 to 13, or those students looking to practice the 5th grade or 6th grade math objectives or skills. Students do not need to know the concepts or topics of the class beforehand. We will learn and review in class. The class materials will be presented via Google Slides and screen shared on the teacher's screen only. Learners will need nothing outside of the Outschool Zoom classroom.
Learning Goals
