Class Experience

US Grade 9
This is the first semester of a high school Secondary 1 Math Course. It is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in fundamental mathematical concepts and problem-solving skills. This course aims to equip students with the mathematical knowledge and reasoning abilities necessary for future success in mathematics courses and real-world applications.

Throughout the course, students will engage in activities and exercises that promote critical thinking, collaboration, and effective communication of mathematical ideas. The curriculum covers various topics, including topics in algebra, geometry, functions, and statistics. Students will meet twice a week but will be expected to study and work on assessments outside of class. Although assignments are provided, students will self-check with the key so that they can ask questions in or outside of class if they need additional help. Assignments are practice and are treated as the opportunity to learn.

Although I do give weekly quizzes, I will also look at in-class work and other performances in order to provide a grade for each student.

Emphasis is placed on developing an understanding of mathematical concepts rather than
rote memorization of formulas and procedures.

We will do some of the lessons on Desmos this will help students be more hands on and allow me to check for understanding. Desmos meets all educational privacy standards. It is important to explore math concepts together in a way that students feel comfortable to participate. This can be done as a group, via private chat or another way. I try to help my students feel comfortable to participate in their own way. Along with Desmos, we will use PowerPoint and the zoom whiteboard.

Semester 1: We will cover all topics that are listed, depending on the class we might go a little slower or a little faster but I have that built into my lesson plans.

Week 1: Introduction to Algebra: Algebraic Expressions, Solving Simple Equations, Solving Two step equations

Week 2: Solving Multi-Step Equations, Solving Absolute Value Equations, Rewriting Equations and Formulas

Week 3 Inequalities: Writing and Graphing, Solving inequalities, Solving Compound and Absolute Value Inequalities

Week 4:- Functions: Function Notation, Linear Functions, Graphing Linear Equations in 3 forms.

Week 5: Writing Equations in Slope-Intercept, Point-Slope Form, and Standard Form. Introduction to Parallel and Perpendicular Lines.

Week 6 Writing Equations in Slope-Intercept, Point-Slope Form, and Standard Form. Introduction to Parallel and Perpendicular Lines.

Week 7: Scatter plots, Analyzing Lines of Fit and Arithmetic Sequences

Week 8: Systems of Equations - Graphing Method, Substitution and Elimination

Week 9: Systems of Equations - Word Problems with Systems of Equations

Week 10: Exponential Functions: Growth and Decay, Comparison of Linear and Exponential Functions

Week 11: Solving Exponential Equations, Geometric Sequences.

Week 12: Solving Exponential Equations, Geometric Sequences

Week 13: Statistics: Measures of Central Tendencies, Box-and-Whisker Plots and Shapes of Distributions

Week 14 Review and Final Assessment
