Learners will learn how to write four different types of structured five paragraph essays. This is a flex course. Flex classes do not meet live. Class recordings will be posted in the classroom by noon EST on the start date. The essays include: Definition, Compare and Contrast, Persuasive, and Analysis. Week 1Lesson 1Definition Essay and Essay StructureObjective: Student will learn how to add more detail to their body paragraphs. Student will practice structuring paragraphs (topic sentence, main idea, and thesis statements). Student will select a word or phrase to define.Week 2Lesson 2Compare/Contrast Essay and OutlineObjective: Student will select two things to compare and contrast using formal writing. Student will include their outline (point-by-point or subject-by-subject).Week 3Lesson 3Persuasive Essay and the Four-Square MethodObjective: Student will learn to support claims with logical reasoning. Student will learn the persuasive elements: pathos, ethos, logos.Week 4Lesson 4Analysis Essay and Literary DevicesObjective: Student will learn to identify the author's purpose (identifying literary devices and theme).
Learners will practice structuring paragraphs (topic sentence, main idea, and thesis statements). Learners will select a word or phrase to define. Learners will include their outline (point-by-point or subject-by-subject). Learners will learn the persuasive elements: pathos, ethos, logos. Learners will choice a piece of literature to analyze based on literary devices, theme, or historical allusions.
Homework Offered
Weekly essays will be assigned.1 - 2 hours per week outside of class

All submitted work will receive both in-text feedback and feedback on a rubric.Grades Offered
A percentage grade will be provided for the second, third, and fourth essay.
