This class builds the foundation for conceptual understanding of multiplication. I draw on students' knowledge of addition to practice an engaging game of "circle and stars", which teaches young learners to multiply by understanding factors as "number of groups" X "size of group", and expressing them visually. This allows them to begin multiplying before memorizing fast facts or skip counts. I get students excited about multiplication by posing it as "big kid math", and showing them that they can multiply--even if they don't realize it yet! Note: This class is best for learners who have not been exposed to multiplication in formal schooling (usually Grades 1 or 2) or who would benefit from engaging review with pictorial aids.
Learning Goals
Students will express and solve for basic multiplication equations using visual representations.
