US Grade 2 - 3
OVERVIEW: In this one week class, students will develop a strong understanding for the basics of multiplication. Students will learn how to create and use models, understand multiplication properties, and improve both their fluency and application! This class is part of a series of courses offered in the same structure and format to address specific math goals. I currently offer Amazing Addition, Super Subtraction, Mastering Multiplication, Decoding Division and Fantastic Fractions. Each class meets 5 times over the course of 1 week for 25 minute long sessions. NOTE: This class will focus on primarily Grade 3 Math Standards. This class will cover introductory multiplication topics, as well as develop students' understanding of how to approach and solve multiplication problems. TOPICS & SCHEDULE OF LEARNING: DAY ONE: Introduction to Multiplication DAY TWO: Create and Use Models to Solve (Grouping Model, Arrays, Repeated Addition, Number Line) DAY THREE: Properties of Multiplication (Zero Property, Identity Property, Commutative Property, Distributive Property, Associative Property) DAY FOUR: Apply Multiplication to Solve Application Based Problems (Word Problems, Explain Thinking, Show Multiple Strategies) DAY FIVE: Improve Fluency and Weekly Review CLASS FORMAT: 1. Introductions and Warm Up 2. Review of Learning (Days 2-5) 3. Introduction of New Content/Instruction 4. Independent Practice with Teacher Feedback 5. Demonstration of Learning: Collaborative Discussion, Strategy Sharing 6. (If time allows) Successes and Struggles Reflection INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES: My classes prioritize student engagement. We will use a wide variety of learning tools during our classes including; slides/visual aids, concrete models, videos, songs, games and more. I ask all students have a paper/pencil or whiteboard accessible to them to ensure they can practice along the way and have an opportunity for hands-on learning. THIS CLASS IS GREAT FOR... - a student wishing to REVIEW & PRACTICE Grade 3/Introductory Multiplication strategies - a student wishing to PREVIEW & LEARN Grade 3/Introductory Multiplication strategies While this class will focus on Grade 3 learning standards, this class is NOT limited to Grade 3 students. Students do not need any background knowledge about multiplication in order to succeed in this class. This class will serve as the perfect blend of a REVIEW or PREVIEW depending on your student's age and math experience.
Learning Goals
1. Students will demonstrate an understanding of key multiplication vocabulary (factors, product, multiply).
2. Students will create and use models to solve for multiplication problems including; grouping models, arrays, number lines and repeated addition sentences.
3. Students will understand and apply properties of multiplication including; Zero Property, Identity Property, Commutative Property, Distributive Property, Associative Property.
4. Students will demonstrate their understanding of multiplication strategies by applying their learning to solve application based problems.
5. Students will be able to show multiple strategies to approach and solve multiplication problems.
6. Students will improve their fluency (accuracy and efficiency) when solving multiplication problems.
7. Students will engage and participate in mathematical discussions with peers using precise math vocabulary to explain their thinking and strategies.
