Class Experience

Number talks are short discussions about how to solve a particular mental math problem. The focus is not on the correct answer, but on all the possible methods of finding the answer. Each learner has a chance to explain their method, and everyone else will learn from other people's methods!

Learners get a short math problem to solve, but the learners are not allowed to use a calculator or paper & pencil. The idea is to solve it in one's head! Number Talks are short discussions focused on mental math and computational strategies. They promote the importance of being flexible with numbers and using a variety of strategies for computation. All learners are encouraged to share their mathematical thinking during Number Talks.
