Looking to get your child more practice with basic Math story problems? This ongoing enrichment class empowers students to begin to tackle word problems to learn, review and practice all crucial and required topics of first grade math, including addition, subtraction, geometry, time, money, measurement and more. We will be practicing 1-step, 2-step and multi-step word problems, breaking down the problems and utilizing strategies that can be used to solve them efficiently. Each math problem presented will unveil multiple solution pathways, encouraging students to think creatively and reason abstractly. Students will grow their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. Here’s how we approach each problem: Problem Analysis- As a small group ( max.4) , we will break down what the problem is asking us to solve. Independent Problem Solving—To foster self-reliance, students will have time to solve problems independently (with help if needed) by drawing pictures, using mental math, or using other strategies. Interactive Sharing - We share our answers and discuss strategies collaboratively. Strategy Discussion - We will explore strategies to tackle word problems efficiently and confidently. Because this class is ongoing, students can enroll at any time. Classes do not build upon each other. The topics will rotate according to the schedule below: Week of Aug. 5 - Geometry & Shapes Week of Aug. 12 - Measurement & Data Week of Aug. 19 - Foundations for Multiplication Week of Aug. 26 - Review for 2nd Grade Week of Sep. 2 - Addition within 100: Pets Week of Sep. 9 - Subtraction within 100: Farm Animals Week of Sep. 16 - Addition & Subtraction within 100: Fairy Tales Week of Sep. 23 - Addition within 1000: Birthday Parties Week of Sep. 30 - Subtraction within 1000: Transportation Week of Oct. 7 - Addition & Subtraction within 1000: Despicable Me Week of Oct. 14 - Place Value: Ice Cream Shop Week of Oct. 21 - Time: Sports Week of Oct. 28 - Money: Circus Week of Nov. 4 - Geometry & Shapes: Famous Landmarks Week of Nov. 11 - Measurement & Data: Medieval Times Week of Nov. 18 - Foundations for Multiplication: Snacks Week of Nov. 25 - Addition within 100: Restaurant Week of Dec. 2 - Subtraction within 100: Dr. Seuss Week of Dec. 9 - Addition & Subtraction within 100: Outer Space Week of Dec. 16 - Addition within 1000: National Geographic Kids Week of Dec. 23 - Subtraction within 1000: At the Park Week of Dec. 30 - Addition & Subtraction within 1000: Bluey Week of Jan. 6 - Place Value: Pizza Parlor Week of Jan. 13 - Time: Road Trip Week of Jan. 20 - Money: Toy Story Week of Jan 27 - Geometry & Shapes: The Magic School Bus Week of Feb. 3 - Measurement & Data: Science Experiments Week of Feb. 10 - Foundations for Multiplication: A Day at School Week of Feb. 17 - Addition within 100: Jungle Adventure Week of Feb. 24 - Subtraction within 100: Disney Week of Mar. 3 - Addition & Subtraction within 100: Week of Mar. 10 - Addition within 1000: Lego City Week of Mar. 17 - Subtraction within 1000: Ocean Exploration Week of Mar. 24 - Addition & Subtraction within 1000: Treasure Hunt Week of Mar. 31 - Place Value: Community Helpers Week of Apr. 7 - Time: Baking Week of Apr. 14 - Money: Local Festivals Week of Apr. 21 - Geometry & Shapes: Animal Habitats Week of Apr. 28 - Measurement & Data: Technology Week of May 5 - Foundations for Multiplication: Gardening Once topics have been cycled through, we will begin again. Phonics is an approach to teaching reading and writing that involves teaching students the association between sounds and the letters that represent them. My Phonics classes are DfE validated full systematic, synthetic phonics program, a way of teaching the building blocks of the English language. The scheme builds and develops the skills and understanding children need to become effective, independent readers and writers. An extensive library of fully-decodable, diverse & dynamic books are also part of the curriculum. It is designed for native or non-native English speakers.
How is literature used in second language teaching?
Literature can make the teaching of a language more fun. It introduces different parts of grammar and sentences in an interactive way. We can talk about interesting topics, encourage students to express their points of view and introduce in depth and current topics.
