Unit 1Narrative EssaysNarrative Essays3 lessons1 WeekWeek 1Lesson 1Narrative Essays Day 1This lesson introduces the narrative essay. We talk about characters and settings and how to describe those with descriptive language.Lesson 2Narrative Essays Day 2This lesson talks about problems and solutions in our story. It goes over how to come up with solutions to problems and the different types of problems that can happen in a narrative.Lesson 3Narrative Essays Day 3In this lesson we will be talking about theme and what that means for narrative essays. We will be finishing up our essays today and talk about how to conclude a narrative essay.Unit 2Persuasive EssaysPersuasive Essays3 lessons1 WeekWeek 2Lesson 4Persuasive Essays Day 1This lesson introduced Persuasive Essays. We will be reading the articles that we need for this essay. We also will be going over how to write the introduction to a persuasive essay.Lesson 5Persuasive Essays Day 2In this lesson we will be talking about the body paragraphs of persuasive essays. We will talk about how to structure a body paragraph using the TBEAR format (Topic sentence, background information, evidence, analysis, and return to thesis). We will write the common ground paragraph together and then students will write the next two body paragraph by themselves.Lesson 6Persuasive Essays Day 3In this lesson, we will be finishing up persuasive essays. We will talk about the rebuttal paragraph and how to respond to a counter claim. We also will talk about the conclusion of a persuasive essay and the different parts of a conclusion.Unit 3Opinion EssaysOpinion Essays3 lessons1 WeekWeek 3Lesson 7Opinion Essays Day 1In this lesson we will introduce opinion essays. We start with a would you rather game to help students get comfortable expressing their opinion with reasons. We then move into reading a couple examples of opinion essays and talk about how to write a introduction to an opinion essay.Lesson 8Opinion Essays Day 2In this lesson we break down the body paragraphs on a opinion essay. We review TBEAR and talk about how that can work for opinion essays. We also look at a new format called OREO (opinion, reason, example, opinion) and see how this format can be used for the body paragraphs. Students will then write an opinion paragraph using one of the formats and then will work on the body paragraphs for their opinion essay.Lesson 9Opinion Essays Day 3This is the last class of the course. We will talk about how to write a conclusion for a opinion essay. Class time will then be given for students to finish their essays and for me to give them any final feedback. We will then do a review of the course and if time permits a Kahoot that will cover what students have learned throughout this course.
Students will learn how to structure 3 popular types of essays. They will learn how to craft their own essays in these structures. They will also write 3 essays from start to finish which will give them the confidence to be able to write an essay that they come up against.
Homework Offered
Students will be writing most of the essays on their own. We will go over the structures in class and go over several examples. Students then will replicate the structure of their own and we will go over the homework in the next classes. Depending on how fast students can write the essay parts this will mean about 2 to 4 hours of homework a week.2 - 4 hours per week outside of class

Students will need A computer, A word processor so they can share their essays with me. Paper and pencils or pens to take notes in class.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
I may use a Kahoot to review the concepts on the last day of class.
All articles and material for the class will be provided and will be posted in the Outschool classroom before the start of the class.
