During this 6 day course students will traverse Poe's short stories and poetry, including Annabel Lee, The Cask of Amontillado and The Masque of the Red Death in search of how he uses literary devices to master the macabre.

Together we will explore Poe's gruesome topics paralleled with his life to discover the inspiration for his prolific work. As a middle and high school English teacher, I have experience teaching Poe, literary devices and the macabre aspect of his work.
Homework OfferedStudents are expected to complete the following readings BEFORE each class session: Week 1: The Tell-Tale Heart Week 2: Cask of Amontillado Week 3: The Masque of Red Death Week 4: The Premature Burial Week 5: The Raven and A Dream Within a Dream Week 6: The Bells and Annabel Lee Depending upon the reader, assignments should take 20 to 60 minutes.

Assessments OfferedInformal assessment via discussion and interactive activities. Students who need a grade for school will have the opportunity to write a paper about Edgar Allan Poe and the impact of his work on the horror genre of literature.
