During this 6 day course students will traverse Poe's short stories and poetry, including Annabel Lee, The Cask of Amontillado and The Masque of the Red Death in search of how he uses literary devices to master the macabre.

Class experience

US Grade 8 - 11
Students will: 
Identify and analyze literary devices in poetry and short stories.
Define and examine themes in poetry and short stories.
Engage in discussion about the literature and its deeper meaning.
Create poetry 
Analyze the work of Poe on literature, specifically the horror genre


As a middle and high school English teacher, I have experience teaching Poe, literary devices and the macabre aspect of his work. 
Homework Offered
Students are expected to complete the following readings BEFORE each class session: Week 1: The Tell-Tale Heart Week 2: Cask of Amontillado Week 3: The Masque of Red Death Week 4: The Premature Burial Week 5: The Raven and A Dream Within a Dream Week 6: The Bells and Annabel Lee Depending upon the reader, assignments should take 20 to 60 minutes.
0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Informal assessment via discussion and interactive activities. Students who need a grade for school will have the opportunity to write a paper about Edgar Allan Poe and the impact of his work on the horror genre of literature.

A PDF supplement will be provided to help guide students through their reading. Additionally students need The Best of Poe book listed in the sources. Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Some of the imagery, language and content is violent and/or graphic.  Poe's stories and poetry are classic literature, but confront death and murder.
