In this class students will acquire strategies to help them effectively grapple with one-step and multi-step story problems at the upper elementary level (grades 3-5).

During this class, learners will gain access to strategies that will help them to effectively grapple with one-step and multi-step 5th grade math story problems. The class will be grounded in a mathematician's game plan introduced and reviewed at the start of each class. We will use the mathematician's game plan to solve 1-2 story problems whole group, engaging in discourse throughout. Then, students will have an opportunity to use the game plan while independently solving math story problems. During the independent work time, students get one-on-one feedback, an opportunity to revise. The close of each session provides an opportunity for learners to reflect and set goals grounded in the mathematician's plan. Week of July 3: Topic- Reading and Interpreting Story Problems Week of July 10th: Topic - Creating a plan to solve Story Problems based on interpretation of the problem Week of July 17th: Topic - Choosing the most efficient strategies for solving Story Problems based on planning Week of July 24th: Topic - Prevent Calculation Errors - Strategies for Double Checking

Story Problems will be provided. Students will need to bring a writing utensil and paper to take notes.
