Have you ever wanted to become a superhero? Now you can, with Masks, a tabletop roleplaying game about young heroes learning the ropes, exploring their powers, and building a team to save the city. Masks is easy to learn and fun to play, with a focus on interaction between characters and player-driven action rather than on stats and rolling dice. Tabletop roleplaying games teach cooperation, leadership, ethics, mental flexibility, creativity, and strategy. More importantly, they create a safe space for students to explore experiences and emotions without judgment. Along with learning the game system, students will learn to work together to build a narrative in a way that is balanced, respectful, and fun.
After working in the a tabletop roleplaying game industry as a writer and editor for 20 years, I opened a small roleplaying game publishing company with my husband, producing materials for the investigative horror game, Chill 3rd Edition. I have regularly run Masks games for students age 8+ since the game's initial publication, including a three-part actual-play game session that aired on YouTube during Dragon Con Goes Virtual in 2020.
3 files available upon enrollmentStudents will need two six-sided dice (D6) or access to a dice rolling website or app. Purchasing Masks books is not required, though students and parents would benefit from reading through the Masks pages on the Magpie Games website (linked in External Resources) to learn more about the different Playbooks. After students have selected Playbooks (during first class session), they should print that Playbook in order to keep track of their character's advancement, Moves, and other relevant information.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Consent is an important part of tabletop roleplaying. During the first game session, I will work with students to establish boundaries for gameplay in order to make all players feel safe. Players are encouraged to create diverse characters. Students are invited to privately message me with topics they wish to avoid during the game, such as animals in danger, major character injury, or a specific phobia. The amount of combat, tone and content of the plotlines, and nature of the villains can be scaled/altered to accommodate player needs.
I teach creative writing, gaming, and popular media & culture to learners from age 8 through high school. I offer a range of courses that focus on specific literary genres, some traditional and some popular/contemporary, as well as multiple...
