Marine Biology - Sharks of the Shallow! A Weekly Camp Exploring & Tracking Sharks (8-Weeks)
In this 8-day camp, we will meet 1x/week, for 8-weeks, to discover known and unique sharks that swim in our vast oceans. Across the seas we go, researching the Tiger Shark to Hammerheads, and more. Each class we'll discuss, interact, write, learn the science and history of this animal, and pick a personal shark to "live" track weekly.
What's included
1 live meeting
30 mins in-class hours per weekHomework
1 hour per week. Each class we will finish the class with the next class' shark 'selection' of a different shark species. Students will need to research and gather information about that shark, and be able to share their findings! Students will have a second worksheet to use with Ocearch.org where they select a shark to track, follow its locations, and track on paper!Class Experience
US Grade 2 - 5
***This is an ongoing class, your child is able to come in at any time or stay for entire 8-weeks, or even retake any classes*** *Must be able to write, or have parent to help* After having a successful Outschool class on Cage Diving with Great White Sharks and swimming with these gentle animals, (along with other sharks in our oceans) I wanted to create a camp for all those shark enthusiasts! Children love to talk shark, engage with each other, listen, think critically, and share their personal findings and stories. In this 8-week camp, we will meet once a week. Class Format: -SHARE TIME-Open class with shark facts and discovery discussion! (I have found there is always so much to talk about!) -REVIEW TIME of the previous week's shark and facts remembered. -Student's findings for the "Shark of the Week." (At the end of class a shark for the following week will be selected. Children will have the week to research their findings and bring them to class!). While doing this we will interact, listen and communicate our findings, thoughts, and facts in an engaging way. -WORKSHEET TIME of the specific shark, its prey, location (using a map), swimming depths, and defense traits. -VIDEO TIME (a short clip video) of the specific shark and talk about the environment of the clip. (Examples: Why can a Hammerhead swim in 1-foot of water while hunting its prey? Is it safe to free dive with Great White?) -TRACKING TIME Visit www.Ocearch.ORG where we will personally pick a shark, fill in the details, draw the location, and track it before each class! Learn/watch more about Ocearch.org and their Shark Tracking and conservation with Seaworld. -GAME TIME Sharks covered per class (in order)- Thresher Shark Tiger Shark Hammerhead Shark Catshark Bull Shark Leopard Shark Whale Shark Great White Shark **NEXT CLASS...if your child LOVED this class and likes a Weekly Class, take a look at my OnGoing Where in the World is This?
