1 hour per week. Students will be encouraged to make page(s) of sketches during the week in a sketchbook, or make progress on their comic while not in class.Assessment
Student's progress will be assessed on a continual basis by regularly reviewing - and evaluating - each student's "work in progress" artworks. At the end of learning a subject manner, they will present their final drawing project alongside a "old drawing" they created at the beginning of the class, compare and witness their own growth that subject matter.Class Experience
*** Disclaimer: Because we aim to create a fairly relaxed, yet focused environment to expose our students with (sometimes) advanced design skillsets, I only teach about half of the class time, leaving the rest of the time for my students to work individually and "hang out". I highly recommended all novice-level students to take a intro-level course of mine before joining this lab for best experience. Thank you! - Mr. Dan*** Welcome to the Manga Lab! In this club, our aim is to create a fun, safe tribe of young talents to, in the long run, create their own "1-page / short episode" manga comic! (Or any manga-like projects.) Our club members will be exposed to practical manga knowledge / skills via watching and following my step-by-step in-person-demos. I will check-in with my students and help them make progress in their manga art learning. The class time is loosely structured as follows: Part 1: Rules, Warm-ups and Updates - When there are new students, I usually will briefly cover class expectations, help them with how to use Zoom. We may start the students off with a warm-up drawing drill. Part 2: Live Demo - Every week, I will touch on, review or introduce a manga drawing / comic story development skillset via live demos. Part 3: Lab Time - Our students will be encouraged to apply what they've learned as they work on their own artwork, talk while working, and find support / constructive feedback from me and fellow classmates. We will touch on and/or review many techniques relating to manga development, including but not limited to: ***Exciting New Topics Added*** • Intro to Vehicle / car design • How to design Aircraft / Spacecraft • Digital painting techniques using Procreate and/or Photoshop ***Regular Manga Lab Topics*** • Fundamental sketching techniques • Head & facial proportions • Hairstyles & eye styles • Costume design • Human body proportions • Gesture drawing • Contour drawing • Basic 3D perspective drawing • Basic human proportions • Environment design • Weather effects • Portfolio Development • Design Schools & Majors • Story development & structures unique to Japanese manga • Basic storyboarding techniques • Manga cell formats • .....and many more!
