Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 5
Watch your learner's confidence SOAR as they strengthen their spelling and decoding skills!

Here is what one Outschool parent has to say about this class:
πŸ—¨οΈ"Teacher is very nice and patient. My learner enjoyed the class a lot. This class really help a lot for my learner's spelling skills. Strongly recommend."

This is a HANDS-ON, MINDS-ON class. Students are engaged and interactive throughout the entire lesson. When their hands are busy, their minds are on!

Schedule of Class Activities:
πŸ‘©πŸΌβ€πŸ€β€πŸ§‘πŸΎ 5 minutes: Welcome
πŸ”¨15 minutes: Build 10 Words with Letter Tiles and Clues; Record in Notebook
πŸ‘‰2 minutes: Transfer Spelling Patterns to New Words
πŸ’»15 minutes: Kahoot Puzzles to Spell Each Word with Picture and Sentence Clues; Nearpod Word Sort

This class is successful because:
βœ… The lessons are interactive and engaging. Hands-On = Minds-On = Retention of Skills
βœ… The lessons feel like problem-solving games.
βœ… The activities present a concise method for involving students in the process of identifying homophones, prefixes, and suffixes and how these change the meaning of words.
βœ… The activities promote student awareness of similarities in words that help develop reading and writing skills.
βœ… The unique approach to building and manipulating words allows learners to see complex spelling patterns between similar words.

BUILD:
A sample set of clues and sentences I give verbally while students manipulate their spelling tiles:
Focus on -ate -art

1. "Use 3 letters to spell ate." (Last night I ate 3 pieces of pizza.)
2. "Change 2 letters to spell art." (In art class we paint and draw.)
3. "Add 1 letter to art to spell mart." (We go shopping at Walmart.)
4. "Add 1 letter to spell smart." (He is very smart and gets all A's.)
5. "Use 5 letters to spell state." (Texas is a very big state.)
6. "Move the letters in state to spell taste." (Can I have a taste of your ice cream?)
7. "Use 6 letters to spell matter." (What's the matter with you?)
8. "Use 8 letters to spell mattress." (We bought a new mattress for my bed.)
9. "Move the letters to find the secret word." (He always knew the answers, and everyone agreed he was the smartest person in the class.) Smartest

TRANSFER:
We'll then transfer our learning to complete the following sentences:
*Someone left the g______ open and the dog got out.
*The eye doctor had me read the letters on the ch____.

SORT & APPLY:
We will apply our new learning while playing Kahoot using the puzzles feature to spell our words. We will also use Nearpod to sort the words into their word families.

Week 1: -ate -art Secret Word: mattress/smartest
Week 2: -ate -ive Secret Word: creative
Week 3: -eap -each Secret Word: parachute
Week 4: -eat -ave Secret Word: cavities
Week 5: -ail -ain Secret Word: principal
Week 6: -ui -uo Secret Word: questions
Week 7: -id -ive -iver Secret Word: shivered

Vowel patterns studied in future lessons of this on-going course: --ate -art -ave -ive -eat -each -ave -ail -ain -ui -uo -id -ive -iver -ip -oil -ealth -est -ep -eep -ing -ee -ie -ime -ile -ip -og -ose -ry -ive -ore -ose -oose -age -ice -ace -ame -eal -ag -ade -ight -itter -orn -ool -an -ast -ound -ear -ar -ent -ull -ill -ell -oud -ale -ail -art -ict -able -uts -ire -uge -ap -ules -og -ound -ood -urn -ue -rue -een -est -aste -rack -ow

You will need a set of spelling tiles (like in the game Scrabble) or letter cards. You can make these on notecards or on small squares of paper. No need to buy spelling tiles! We only need up to 8 letters each week. I will message each week to let you know what letters we'll need for the following week.

Please also bring a notebook or piece of paper to write down the words as we build them.

Your learner will need to know how to use the chat in Zoom to access the links or open a second tab on their device and type kahoot.it. There is a game PIN learners will enter that assures our game is private and only being played by the learners in our class.
