Watch your learner's confidence SOAR as they strengthen their spelling and decoding skills! Here is what one Outschool parent has to say about this class: π¨οΈ"My daughter looks forward to this spelling class every week! She loves how interactive it is with her teacher, as well as other students, learning how to spell words and playing games. I would highly recommend the class!" This is a HANDS-ON, MINDS-ON class. Students are engaged and interactive throughout the entire lesson. When their hands are busy, their minds are on! Schedule of Class Activities: π©πΌβπ€βπ§πΎ 5 minutes: Welcome and Build Community π¨15 minutes: Build 10 Words with Letter Tiles and Clues π3 minutes: Sort the 10 Words into Rhyming Categories π2 minutes: Transfer Spelling Patterns to New Words π»10 minutes: Play Kahoot Puzzles to Spell Each Word with Picture and Sentence Clues AND/OR complete a word sorting activity on Nearpod. The chosen activity will depend on the amount of time left in class. π― We finish off each class with an interactive game of Kahoot using the Kahoot "puzzles" feature where learners will be given a sentence with a missing word from the day's lesson and they have to figure out the missing word then use the puzzle pieces to spell it. This is a HIT in all of my classes with learners! πLearners will be given a unique code after class to the Kahoot game we play in class so they can choose to play again at home to reinforce the skills we practiced in class. This class is successful because: β The lessons are interactive and engaging. Hands-On = Minds-On = Retention of Skills β The lessons feel like problem-solving games. β The activities present a concise method for involving students in the process of identifying homophones, prefixes, and suffixes and how these change the meaning of words. β The activities promote student awareness of similarities in words that help develop reading and writing skills. β The unique approach to building and manipulating words allows learners to see complex spelling patterns between similar words. BUILD: A sample set of clues and sentences I give verbally while students manipulate their spelling tiles: Focus on -ole and -ose 1. "Use 3 letters to spell not." (I am not hungry.) 2. "Use 4 letters to spell nose." (The puppy's nose was wet and cold.) 3. "Change one letter to spell hose." (We washed the driveway with the hose.) 4. "Change one letter to spell hole." (My dog dug a big hole in the yard.) 5. "Use 5 letters and spell those" 6. "Use 5 letters and spell stole." 7. "Add 1 letter and spell stolen." 8. "Use 6 letters and spell honest." 9. "Add two letters to spell honestly." SORT: We will sort the words we just made into -ole and -ose rhyming words groups. TRANSFER: We'll then transfer our learning to complete the following sentences: *She ch____ to do her homework first. *Soon the tadp____ will turn into a frog. APPLY: We will apply our new spelling skills while playing a game of Kahoot using their puzzles feature to spell each word. Sample Lessons: β οΈ -ame -im -ime -ate Secret Word: migrate β οΈ -at -ate Secret Word: elevator β οΈ -ate -ale Secret Word: athletes β οΈ -an -ain -aining Secret Word: training β οΈ -ail -amp -ain Secret Word: complain β οΈ -art -ip -air -ort Secret Word: airport β οΈ -ear -ay -ayed Secret Word: sprayed Other vowel patterns studied in future lessons of this on-going course: -ag -ay -eal -east -eat -ead -ale -addle -in -eep -ine -end -ed -eed -ee -eel -eek -eat -ate -it -ick -ide -ipe -ip -ies -ides -op -opping -oped -ope -opped -ose -one -ore -ot -ole -ose -ock -ort -at -oats -oast -ue -ule -ude -or -ow -ower -ew -ow -oop -oke -out -ight -ing -our -oon -ool -oot -old -ip -oil -ax -ail -ox -earn -ean -ape -age -ack -eak -ear -arks -are -ap -each -anch -anches -ew -ide -ie -y -ory -am -ough -ought You will need a set of spelling tiles (like in the game Scrabble) or letter cards. You can make these on notecards or on small squares of paper. No need to buy spelling tiles! We only need up to 8 letters each week. I will message each week to let you know what letters we'll need for class that week. **Please note: If this class has 4 or fewer learners, it may end a bit early. The activities don't take as long with a small number of kids.** πLeaves of Learning Academy is rated "Popular" by Outschool because we are in the top 10% of all teachers on Outschool. This means we offer classes that are in high demand that fill up quickly! π *Leaves of Learning Academy is an organization on Outschool with about 18 teachers. Occasionally, the teacher for this class may not be able to teach and a substitute teacher from the organization will take her place. Only teachers trained to teach this class will serve as a possible substitute for the class. A message will be posted in the Outschool classroom before the class takes place in the event a substitute will be teaching. I am happy to offer a refund to any learner who prefers not to attend the class with a substitute. Please send a message through Outschool in that event and I will issue a refund. Thank you! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Outschool policies regarding refunds for classes: β If your learner misses a class meeting, you are not entitled to a refund. Your teacher may, however, transfer your learner to another available section, or provide a class recording, at their discretion. β If your learner has not joined the meeting 10 minutes after the classβs start time, the meeting may be cancelled, at the teacherβs discretion. This is considered a missed meeting and you are not entitled to a refund. β Refunds are not guaranteed in the event that your learner misses a past or future class meeting due to a schedule conflict, and will depend on the class-specific refund policy. β If your learnerβs meeting time changes because of daylight saving time starting or ending for several world regions, you are not entitled to a refund if theyβre unable to attend. Please review your learnerβs schedule ahead of time to ensure you know when classes are meeting.
