Making Movies in your Mind and on Paper - Reading Comprehension at It's Best

Students will create a storyboard based on what they've read from their favorite book. You don't need to be an artist to create a storyboard; simple stick figures work great, too. Reading comprehension and art all in one class!

Class Experience

In this class, the elements of story will be taught and how to identify each while reading a story.

We will begin with a book that your child is reading or perhaps would like to read and comprehend, and together we will break it down into small parts and then we will sketch the gist of what we read - taking the pictures in our mind and putting them on paper. This is a very interactive way to grasp what your child is reading, check for understanding, and share what they've read.

My teaching style is to meet each student where they are in the learning process and then go from there. I like to ask open-ended questions to prompt critical thinking in my students.

Students will interact with me throughout the entire lesson via demonstration, sharing, discussion.
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to identify and break-down the key elements of a story including plot points, setting, characters, and conflict and resolution. By doing so, students will create a storyboard by drawing stick figures (or more details if they're inclined!), to demonstrate the story using pictures. Students will then be able to summarize what they've read by "reading" their storyboards.

This is a very hands-on class with lots of demonstration, sharing, time for questions and discussion, and a piece of artwork to keep!

Hi -
I'm super excited to join the Outschool team of teachers. I have a Master of Science in Language and Literacy with a specialty as a Teacher of Reading. I am a retired classroom teacher for 3rd and 4th grades and I was a private tutor for elementary and middle school levels. I have also been a paralegal for major law firms, a company manager for a Civic Light Opera, and I was the Founder and Executive Director for a non-profit helping dogs in rescues find their new homes.

My philosophy for teaching is that there is no teaching outside of the box because I don't believe there is a box! The sky is the limit for learning and exploring. I like to meet each student where they are and then go from there at a pace that is just right for them.

In my spare time, I love to train my two large dogs, ride horses, spend time in my garden with my family, play golf, knit, sew, bake, read, and travel!

I'm super excited to meet you and to be your teacher for your education journey!
