In this class, Danulf the Viking will teach kids about Viking runes and symbols and use them to paint our very own runestone! A runestone is typically a raised stone with a runic inscription from the Viking Age that is used as a way to honor ancestors, explorers, and great warriors. Sometimes these stones featured animals like snakes, wolves, horses, and dragons, runic writing, and pictures or great warriors, gods and goddesses. We will paint our stones with whatever symbols we like best and learn to paint figures in the Viking style.
Learning Goals
Students will become familiar with the art style of the Viking Age Norse people, and learn some of the stories around the origin of runes and other symbols.
Other Details
Supply List
Learners will need a rock to paint on (preferably one big enough to allow them to paint multiple symbols, pavers and even bricks also work great!), chalk to sketch out their design, and their favorite color of paint (red or white are the most "historical")
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
We will look at pictures of real historical Runestones and use historical sources to find our symbols
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been sword fighting professionally for 7 years as an instructor, entertainer, and educator. I studied History at Southern New Hampshire University, and have performed on stage, film, tv, and in person all over the country!
As an educator I have brought History and Swordsmanship lessons to schools, after school programs, summer camps, and libraries; I have taught children and adults both Historical Swordsmanship and Olympic Fencing, and my unique blend of history and entertainment is based on the idea of Experimental Archaeology... its best to learn by doing!
