Let's have fun reading and discussing Macbeth by William Shakespeare. Did you ever wonder where these great quotes came from? “Double, double toil and trouble: Fire burn, and cauldron bubble.” "Fair is foul, and foul is fair." "Something wicked this way comes." Macbeth is a fantastic play with intrigue, deceit, murder, witches, and royalty. It's entertaining and fun to read. During this 5-week class, we will be reading Macbeth aloud. Don't panic! We'll be using the No Fear Shakespeare Macbeth book. This book puts plain English next to Shakespeare's Early Modern English. The learners will be given parts to read. During class, we will read the assigned Acts and Scenes. We will discuss our reading before each class. Each learner will be expected to read at least one part. If there is a reason why a learner is not able to read, please email me before the first class. Learners will read the translated version of the assigned acts and scenes before each class. This will help them understand the play better. I will also be showing short (1-7 minute) video summaries of the act/scene as necessary. The videos are another tool I use to ensure the learners understand the play. They are very well made. Reading the play during class will increase reading fluency, speech, comprehension, and confidence. The atmosphere in my classes is safe and welcoming. I encourage all learners to be respectful of everyone. Each learner should feel comfortable to read their parts, express their opinions, or ask questions. ***To ensure the best possible learning experience, I do expect cameras to remain on during class. If you would prefer the camera to be off, please let me know by email. ** All classes will begin on time as long as there is at least one learner in the classroom. If there are no students in the class 10 minutes after the class start time, the teacher will exit the classroom. This class cannot be taught with zero students. No recording will be available for classes with zero attendance.
Learning Goals
Learners will develop an understanding (and hopefully an appreciation) of Shakespeare. Their reading fluency will improve. They will also be able to comprehend the play.
