In this one time art class, students will create a llama painting using mixed media materials. With step-by-step instructions, students will design, draw, and paint a Peruvian textile background and add details to personalize their pieces.

During this class students will create a mixed media llama painting using a llama image (several options will be provided), oil pastels, markers, and watercolor paints. I'll provide step-by-step instructions to create a traditional Peruvian background, decorate a llama, and add flower details using items found at home. We'll discuss color and pattern choices, and llama facts as we work. This class is inclusive, I welcome all learners. Students are welcome to share their work if desired, but there is no obligation. I encourage learners to ask questions and share their insights, but I realize that some students are more comfortable observing. My teaching style is inclusive and approachable, and my goal is to foster curiosity and enthusiasm about the creative process.
Learning Goals
Students will learn about traditional Peruvian textile patterns.
Students will design a background based on traditional Peruvian designs.
Students will use a variety of materials to create a three dimensional piece of art.
Students will learn basic facts about llamas and where they live.

Education
I am a special education teacher and artist who absolutely loves to create! I enjoy bringing creativity to all of of my lessons, and I encourage students to celebrate their own unique qualities. I have a BFA in Printmaking, and a Master of Science in Special Education. I am also a certified elementary teacher, and yoga instructor.
Experience
Teaching, creating art, and self-expression are passions of mine. I have been creating art throughout my life. As a child I would sit and create collages from cereal, pasta, and yarn. I collected twigs, leaves and flowers to use in my creations. As I grew older, that creative energy expanded as I studied printmaking, handmade paper, and handmade books. Those mediums felt a bit like collage to me--combining materials to create something new. I LOVE to read, and for me, these art forms are a natural extension of storytelling. I try to bring that passion and creative energy to all of my classes. It is important that students in my class feel comfortable and accepted, and creativity is a great outlet for self-expression.
I've worked with children throughout my adult life. I have over 7 years of direct experience working in the public school system as a paraprofessional, elementary school teacher, and special education teacher. In this setting I've worked with students in grades pre-K to 7th grade, supporting them in their social/emotional growth, as well as their academic growth. I've taught creative arts classes and art camps, yoga classes and workshops for kids age 7-15, and volunteered in classrooms and local churches.
I am so inspired by my students, and I enjoy spending time getting to know them. My teaching style is calm, clear, and warm. I believe boundaries and guidelines provide structure, but flexibility and humor should exist within that framework.
