Class Experience

Do you love drawing, sketching, and creating? Wanna go pro? If so, a career in graphic design might be for you!

In this one-time career exploration class, we'll discuss what graphic designers do and the type of work they are involved in. We'll compare several specialties within design as well as examine examples in each one. We'll evaluate the characteristics designers possess and reflect on our own qualities to ask ourselves, 'Is graphic design the right career for me?". Lastly, we'll compare the different paths you can take to plan your own graphic design career as well as discover how you can start right now while still in high school!

The class will be presented as a combination of discussion, presentation and engagement activities. We will complete a mock-up sketching activity during class so please have a pencil and paper available.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Welcome! My name is Sharon Harry and I am a believer that life-long learning enables you to make anything possible!

I received my Bachelor's degree in Psychology with a minor in Child Development from Florida State University and was very involved in K-12 service learning and volunteerism in college. Having always loved drawing, writing, and problem-solving, I started to dabble in graphic design and later found my calling in marketing. Today, I am a successful marketing and business strategy consultant as well as an Outschool Teacher. I get to do all the things I enjoy most and make a living from it as well!

After becoming a mom, I started to work with children as a coach, mentor, and GirlScout leader. I soon realized that I loved teaching more than anything else I had ever done! I believe all learning should be as hands-on as possible, so I always try to engage my students with fun activities throughout my courses.

Fun Facts: I have two wonderful daughters who I love to pieces and who challenge me to learn something new every day. In addition to being a mom, I love to travel, hike, kayak, read, write, draw, and paint.
