In this multi-week course, students will start by learning about the fascinating life of J.R.R. Tolkein and some of his influential contemporaries. Next, they will read the Lord of the Rings: the Return of the King and discuss it in class. The majority of the class periods will be heavily discussion based. If your student is hesitant about speaking aloud in class, there will be alternate submissions available for discussion points. The discussions will serve the purpose of testing reading comprehension as well as helping students to understand the material. Learners don't need any experience, just a zest an excitement for Lord of the Rings or mythological fiction in general. It will be very helpful for all students joining this class to read the Lord of the Rings: the Two Towers before enrolling in this class. The class break-down is as follows: Class 1: Read the Return of the King book 5 chapter 1- book 5 chapter 6 Class 2: Read the Return of the King book 5 chapter 7- book 6 chapter 3 Class 3: Read the Return of the King book 6 chapter 4- book 6 chapter 9 These reading assignments should be completed BEFORE each class starts.
Learning Goals
I want students to be familiar with LOTR lore and the specific storylines of each character. I also want them to become adept at recognizing foreshadowing and symbolism in mythological literature.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
The Lord of the Rings books involve graphic and sometimes violent storylines. Each parent/guardian should consult with their learner to establish if this is appropriate for their consumption.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
I've lived, for as long as I can remember, as a voracious reader and fan of literature. At University I took as many extra literature classes as my schedule would allow. After creating and teaching several literature classes on Outschool I began to realize the passion I have for sharing my favorite literature with students.
