Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 6
This course is for students who have completed 5th-grade mathematics. This class previews four main topics of 6th-grade mathematics; working with variables, multiplication, and division of fractions, ratios and proportions, and integers. This is an introduction to these 4 topics. It is not comprehensive. All class sessions will include hands-on activities and class discussions. Students need to be prepared to share their thinking with their peers by having cameras and microphones on.
There will be no direct instruction. Instead, students will be guided through a series of activities created to help them think deeply about mathematics. Students will need paper, pencil, and colored pens/markers for each class.

The course will follow the following schedule:
Day 1: Introduction to Integers
Day 2: Introduction to Ratios and Proportions
Day 3: Exploring Multiplicative Relationships through Fraction Division
Day 4: Introduction to Variables and Solutions to Equations

Please Note: This is an introduction to these topics, so no prior knowledge is needed.

I am a non traditional teacher, no lectures here!
Instead my classes focus on being:
*Student Centered- they lead the pace
*Critical Thinking -complex tasks are given that may be a bit unusual but will cause students to think deeply
*Problem Solving- word problems to keep concepts in context
*Focus on discovering patterns- patterns is the basis of the study of algebra and higher levels of math thinking
*Students create their understanding versus being told what to think

I am constantly learning how to become a better math teacher! I have a Master's degree in Math Education but I don't believe that means I know everything. In fact I am constantly reading about the brain, and the best ways to teach math. I also am constantly evaluating my classes and content and making changes based on how learners interact with the material.

I have 13 years of experience in Education, and have taught math at all levels including adults.

In my down time, I love hanging with my husband, and two girls. We love to read books, play games and do math together (of course:)
