Long Division Crash Course

In this 4 week crash course students will review how to complete the standard algorithm for long division.
Class

What's included

4 live meetings
4 in-class hours
Homework
1 hour per week. I can provide a short assignment for students to work on outside of class time.
Assignments
Students will generate completed division equations as a result of independent practice assignments.
Progress Report
I can provide a basic summary of what the child learned and recommended next steps upon request.

Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 8
Intermediate Level
I firmly believe that with the right strategies and tools every student can achieve what they set their minds to and I am here to help them get to where they need to be. I will use an 'I do, you do, we do' model to teach/review long division. I will lecture/demonstrate, take questions and have students direct me through a problem, give students the opportunity for supervised independent practice, and have students participate in collaborative or competitive games to test their skills and review content.

Students will review how to do long division using the standard algorithm. Students will see a demonstration and explanation, then practice collaboratively, then practice independently with supervision and facilitation.

General Class Outline
1. Welcome/Overview
2. Demonstration and Explanation of skill
3. Collaborative practice
4. Independent practice with supervision
5. Review/Game
Learning Goals
Students will refresh their recollection on the steps of the long division algorithm and will examine the procedure in specific circumstances.

4 Lessons
over 4 Weeks
Lesson 1:
Steps of Long Division with Single-digit Divisors
Students will learn what the steps of long divison are and how to use a multiplication chart and their know-how to complete long division with a single-digit divisor (i.e. 40015/5).
60 mins online live lesson
Lesson 2:
Single-digit Divisors with Remainders
Students will learn what to do if the dividend will not divide evenly.
60 mins online live lesson
Lesson 3:
Dividing Decimals
Students will learn what to do if there are decimals in the division problem and what to do if there are remainder to convert the remainder into a decimal quotient.
60 mins online live lesson
Lesson 4:
Double Digit Divisiors
Students will learn how to divide when the problem contains a double-digit divisor (i.e. 43140/25).
60 mins online live lesson
