Class Experience
US Grade 1 - 6
Writing is very important for school success in most subjects. When learners have a hard time spelling, this can really hold them back in their writing. This class is designed as a boost to learners' spelling skills. I will teach systematically, at your learner's preferred pace. I'll assess informally & frequently in order to be efficient- not spending time on what they already know, but working sequentially from where they have need. Writing sample(s) will be used to determine a student's spelling needs. Each week they will learn to spell new words using sound/letter association where this works. They'll observe and learn 'tricky parts' that don't follow these associations, and learn patterns and rules associated with spellings where they apply. Words will be grouped according to rules, and they will use word families to extend their learning. In order that students remember, and learn to use their new spelling skills, they will have opportunities to review and use words in a variety of activities. We will explore different ways of learning words including multi-sensory approaches. This will help learners as they grow and become more independent in their learning.
Learning Goals
1. Learners will know and use a variety of spelling rules to correctly spell words they previously misspelled.
2. Learners will use word families and spelling patterns to correctly spell words they previously misspelled.
3. Learners will use sound/letter associations (phonics) to spell words correctly wherever possible.
4. Learners will gain a better understanding of how to study and learn to correctly spell word parts that don't follow sound/letter rules.
5. Learners will use words they learn, showing greater confidence in their writing abilities.
