📖 Welcome to Little Readers: Guided Reading for Young Minds! 📖

Led by a qualified and experienced teacher, this personalised tutoring class provides young readers with the tools they need to become confident and proficient readers. Through guided reading sessions, learners will develop essential (VIPERS) reading skills such as vocabulary building, making inferences, drawing predictions, explaining, retrieving information from the text and summarising and sequencing events in a story. Alongside developing these skills, students will also develop their reading fluency while exploring a variety of age-appropriate texts.

📚 What topics will you cover?

Fluency - 👆🏼
Practicing reading with accuracy, appropriate speed and expression

Vocabulary Development - 💬
Learning and using new words to expand language

Reading Comprehension - 🧠
Developing strategies to understand and interpret the text, including identifying main ideas and making inferences.

Text Analysis - 🔍
Exploring story elements such as characters, setting, plot and themes

Critical Thinking - 💡
Engaging in activities that require comparisons to be made (between characters and across texts), ask open-ended questions, encourages justification and reasoning to support their thoughts/opinions and allows for the discussion of different perspectives

Reading Strategies - 📖
Utilising techniques like summarising, questioning, predicting, and visualising to enhance understanding

Retelling and Summarizing - 🗣️
Practicing how to retell a story or summarise key points to reinforce comprehension

Personal Reflection - 🪞
Encouraging students to reflect on their reading experiences, set goals and monitor their progress

🏫 How is your class structured?

Each session will feature:

1. A warm-up activity to engage learners
2. An introduction to one of the VIPERS skills that will be the focus for the week(s)
3. A guided reading segment based on the selected text, where learners will have the opportunity to read aloud. Following clear modelling from the teacher, learners will also answer questions to practice the highlighted reading skill
4. Independent targeted skill practice and activities to solidify understanding

👩🏻‍🏫 How will you teach?

During your child's initial guided reading session, their reading skills will be evaluated using the teacher assessment framework for reading established by the Standards and Testing Agency (UK). Based on this evaluation, I will then assign them a book band suitable for their reading development stage, ensuring they are appropriately challenged without feeling overwhelmed by the material. Digital copies will be provided.

Multimedia resources such as audio recordings, videos, or interactive websites are used to enhance understanding and engagement with the text.
