10 in-class hoursClass Experience
In this class, we will be learning to read. We will do this by reading a series of small books, discussing a new topic each week, and applying it to their lives. This is a fun way to help your Little Reader start reading. This class will be both educational and fun. We will play games, sing, and sometimes get a little silly. My favorite way to learn and teach is through play. I encourage children to bring topic related toys to class. For example, If we are talking about pigs this week, then go ahead and bring your Peppa Pig along. We can use Peppa to help us spell a new name and enrich the classroom. To get acquainted with the topics discussed in class, check out the classroom plan below. This is a general outline and is subject to change based upon the pace of the specific students in the class. Week 1: What Do You See? Week 2: Can you Draw? Week 3: Follow Me Oink! Oink! Week 4: Patterns Week 5: Weather: Snow Weather: Wind Week 6: Weather: Rain Week 7: Weather: Sun Week 8: What Shines? Week 9: I Like Me I Can! Week 10: Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes Week 11: All about School Week 12: Party! Grades, Testing, and Homework I will not be providing formal grades or testing for this class. The intention behind this class is to encourage your little reader to develop an intrinsic joy for reading; one that is not based on scores or the pursuit of perfection but rather the act of reading itself. However, this is a classroom setting so for the purpose of setting the pace for the class, I may send tailored activities for students to work on outside of class. Materials Your reader will need something to write with. Dry-erase boards and markers are usually beneficial although not required. Students may also need a space free of obstructions for occasional scavenger hunts. Although students will be informed to move around carefully, we want to take all precautions to stay safe. We will also be using the Little Level Readers series Level A by Maria Fleming and Deborah Schecter. This is the required material for the class. The link below will take you to Little Leveled Readers A-D. This will be enough material for reading even beyond our class and into the next 3 levels of this course. https://www.amazon.com/Scholastic-Leveled-Readers-Phonics-Reading/dp/B00IEBOEPE/ref=asc_df_B00IEBOEPE/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312543040920&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=9722160625906148615&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1028087&hvtargid=pla-571435374177&psc=1 If you have any questions, please send me a message and I would be happy to answer them. Also, if there is any concern about the costs associated with the materials and the class itself, please don't be afraid to ask because I would be more than happy to accommodate your family's financial circumstances.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
I recommend parental guidance simply because of the age of the group. They may need help positioning the camera and using the computer functions. On occasion we will be having scavenger hunts for household items of which students will need the help of a parent.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
