Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 2
Beginner - Intermediate Level
Welcome to 'Little Mathematicians: Fraction Fun!' a 1:1 math class designed specifically for young learners aged 5-8. This engaging and interactive class focuses on teaching fractions in a warm and supportive environment. Through a combination of clear modelling, built in fluency practice, word problems with real-life contexts, hands-on activities, interactive games and personalised instruction, your child will develop a strong foundation in subtraction, setting them up for future of math success.

Topics taught:

🍕Understanding of Halves: Learners learn to recognise, find, and name a half as one of two equal parts of an object, shape, or quantity

🍕 Fraction Notation: Learners will be introduced to the notation of 1/2 and 1/4, so they become familiar with how fractions are written and read

🍕Understanding of Halves and Quarters: Learners extend their knowledge to quarters, learning to recognise, find, name, and write fractions of a length, shape, set of objects, or quantity

🍕Counting in Fractions: Students also learn to count in fractions, for example, counting in steps of 1/2 or 1/4, to help them understand the sequencing and equivalence of fractions

🍕Equivalent Fractions: Learners will begin to understand simple equivalences, such as recognising that two quarters are the same as one half

Taught by a qualified primary school teacher, my aim is to to meet your child’s unique needs and ensure they feel confident and supported throughout the learning process. I believe in making math fun and relatable, turning abstract concepts into tangible, understandable lessons. This is achieved using the concrete-pictorial- abstract process characteristic of the 'Math Mastery' approach. My teaching methods involve interactive instruction using visual aids, slide and video clips to explain concepts clearly; hands-on learning incorporating physical objects and manipulatives for practical understanding; engaging learners through storytelling and games and providing immediate, constructive feedback to tackle misconceptions.

Whilst each lesson will focus on a different area of fractions, the general format of the session remains the same and will include:

👩🏻‍🏫 A Warm-Up Activity: Each session begins with a quick warm-up to engage your child and prepare them for learning.

👩🏻‍🏫 An Interactive Lesson: A focused, interactive lesson on the day’s topic using slides, video clips, and live demonstrations.

👩🏻‍🏫 Hands-On Activities: Practical activities using physical objects like toys and blocks to visualise parts of a whole.

👩🏻‍🏫 Fluency Practice: Regular practice of fundamental skills and concepts to reinforce learning and improve speed whilst mantaining accuracy.

👩🏻‍🏫Games and Challenges: Fun math games and challenges to reinforce the lesson and keep your child engaged.

👩🏻‍🏫Practice and Review: Guided practice problems and review to solidify understanding.

🧑‍💻 Interaction is at the heart of Little Mathematicians. Learners will have plenty of opportunities to engage with the teacher through:

Parental Guidance
Dear Parents and Guardians, While I strive to create a positive and enjoyable learning environment, I understand that some children may experience 'math anxiety'. Math anxiety can manifest as feelings of stress or fear when faced with mathematical tasks, and it is important to address these feelings early on in order to foster a lifelong love for learning. What you should know... 🧮 My classes are designed to be supportive and encouraging. I use interactive and playful methods to make addition enjoyable and relatable for young learners. 🛎️ As this is a 1:1 private tutoring session, your child will receive personalised attention suited to their learning pace and style which will help build their confidence. 📩 Please keep an open line of communication with the teacher regarding your child's experiences and feelings towards math. This will help me adapt my teaching methods to better suit their needs. 🏡 Your support at home is crucial! Encouraging a positive attitude towards math and praising your child’s efforts can significantly reduce anxiety. 😟 If your child shows signs of math anxiety, such as avoiding math activities or expressing frustration, please inform the teacher. Together, we can work on strategies to make math a more positive experience for your little one. On a separate note, ⚠️ Please supervise your child when they are using math manipulatives or scissors to ensure they do not put any small items in their mouth or hurt themselves. Safety is my top priority and your assistance in monitoring their use of these materials is greatly appreciated.
