Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 2
In this engaging and hands-on unit, young learners will discover that computers are everywhere—not just in phones and tablets but in many everyday objects that follow instructions! Over six weeks, students will explore foundational computer science concepts through stories, creativity, and playful activities designed specifically for 6–9-year-olds.

Topics:

What makes something a computer
How to create simple algorithms (step-by-step instructions)
Loops (repeating actions)
Conditional logic (if/then decisions)
Debugging (finding and fixing mistakes)
Inputs and outputs (how computers react to commands)

Each class follows a consistent format:

Warm-up game or question
Story or real-world example
Discussion and exploration
Main activity or craft (such as building a paper robot or creating an input/output puppet)
Reflection and sharing
Optional at-home challenge

Teaching Style:

My approach is creative, encouraging, and hands-on. I use relatable metaphors, storytelling, role-play, simple coding exercises, and games to make learning fun and meaningful. I foster an environment where making mistakes is celebrated as part of learning.

Interaction:

Learners will actively participate weekly through games, guided discussions, building and coding projects, and sharing their creations with the class. Each child will have frequent opportunities to ask questions and receive feedback during activities.

Learning Goals

Identify what makes something a computer (recognize that computers follow instructions and are not limited to screens or devices).
Create and follow simple algorithms (step-by-step instructions) to solve a task or complete an activity.

Syllabus

6 Lessons
over 6 Weeks
Lesson 1:
What Is a Computer?
We’ll learn that a computer is anything that follows instructions—even things we don’t usually think of as computers!
55 mins online live lesson
Lesson 2:
Instructions Make Magic
We’ll discover how to give clear, step-by-step instructions (algorithms) to make things happen.
55 mins online live lesson
Lesson 3:
Loops — Do It Again!
We’ll explore how to use loops to make computers repeat actions without extra work.
55 mins online live lesson
Lesson 4:
Decisions, Decisions
We’ll learn how computers make choices using if/then logic, just like we do!
