Literature Study : Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman

This class will study the book Noughts and Crosses written by award winning author Malorie Blackman. Learners will need their own copy. This class will have a reading schedule of about 40 pages per week and then meet once a week for a live class, with discussion and writing activities. For our writing activities we will utilise Nearpod, these will consist of essay style questions, quizzes and interactives that meet our learning goals (see list below). Common Core Literacy Standards for grades 8-10: - Cite specific textual evidence to support analysis of primary and secondary sources, attending to such features as the date and origin of the information. - Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of how key events or ideas develop over the course of the text. - Analyze in detail a series of events described ina text; determine whether earlier events caused later ones or simply preceded them. - Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary describing political, social, or economic aspects of history/social studies. - Analyze how a text uses structure to emphasize key points or advance an explanation or analysis - Identify aspects of a text that reveal an author’s point of view or purpose (e.g., loaded language, inclusion or avoidance of particular facts). - Interpret words and phrases as they are used in a text, including determining technical, connotative, and figurative meanings, and analyze how specific word choices shape meaning or tone. - Analyze the structure of texts, including how specific sentences, paragraphs, and larger portions of the text (e.g., a section, chapter, scene, or stanza) relate to each other and the whole. - Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.
I have a BA (Hons) degree in English and a Teaching Literacy Diploma for Primary and Secondary Schools. I am a qualified English Language teacher with TEFL and am currently studying a Masters Degree in English.

The race-reversal premise of this book effectively illustrates both small and large instances of racism that happen everyday to people of color in real life, effectively inspiring readers to empathize with the have-nots. The book clearly has compassion for underdogs, and displays how power corrupts.
