This reading comprehension activity is highly engaging because each learner has a specific job or role that helps the class to comprehend the passage of the day. Each reading role that is assigned, is important to comprehending the passage and requires higher-level thinking to fulfill their reading responsibility. A few roles that are included are the "word wizard," the "character detective," or the "question quizzer." Each role represents a crucial part of comprehending a text. These skills include using context clues, making inferences, and generating questions as you read. At the end of each class, students always summarize the passage to check their comprehension. CLASS OUTLINE: ~Teacher explains each reading role and the responsibility. (document posted in the classroom) ~Students roll a die to find which reading role they are the leader of. ~Read the passage one paragraph at a time. (teacher shares screen for all to see) ~Students share their idea, one at a time, for their assigned reading role. ~All students records these ideas on the response page provided in the classroom. ~Summarize the reading as a class. ~Teacher reviews the reading comprehension skills that were used in the literature circle class time.
