Class Experience

The Listen with Huckle Cat School Time Art class will create opportunities for learning, friendships and your child's imagination to be ignited. We will have fun with letters, numbers, days of the week, seasons, colors, sing, read and listening to the amusing classic stories of every day happenings and adventures through a busy town and inside a preschool classroom. Together we will uncover all the silly and not so silly adventures of Huckle Cat and his Friend Lowly Worm. We will read together, laugh, ask questions, discuss and draw a picture of our own silly story. During this time together I will use a discussion technique that incorporates four main strategies—predicting, questioning, clarifying, summarizing—that good readers use together to comprehend text. Together we become aware, good listeners, and interactive participants.

“Richard Scarry is one of the world's best-loved children's authors EVER! Generations of children all over the world have grown up spending hours poring over his books filled with all the colorful details of their daily lives. No other illustrator has shown such a lively interest in the words and concepts of early childhood. For himself, whenever he was asked how old he was, Scarry would always put up one hand and laugh, saying, "five!"“

“In his extraordinary career, Richard Scarry illustrated over 150 books, many of which have never been out of print. His books have sold over 100 million copies around the world, and are currently published in over twenty languages. Richard Scarry, Jr., also an illustrator, carries on his father's work today under the name of Huck Scarry. He was posthumously awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from The Society of Illustrators in 2012.”

Teacher expertise and credentials
MY LIFE:
I'm an New York State Certified teacher in art education K-12 and have a masters in special education. I’m well trained to assist children with learning disabilities and special needs.

My approach to learning art is somatic and intuitive. This student oriented therapeutic approach creates space for unwinding the nervous system and the creative energies within us. My goal is to allow the inner child to experience freedom, and in freeing the inner child we can discover our real voice and our purpose in this world. The earth centered mindfulness, Waldorf inspired focus is on creating with natural materials, nature, and tuning into our abundant creative energies to get your kid excited about learning.

Thank you so much for embarking on this transformative process for your child.

More info on me: From 2000 to 2010, I taught middle school and high school art to 7th - 12th graders, lead an art club and GEAR UP program after school. Now I’m a mother, the art director of a non profit organization, Full STEAMM Ahead where the focus is STEAM based mindfulness workshops, events and classes and director of WildChildOrganicArtist teaching studio based in Port Washington, NY.. I also teach per diem art in community centers, after school programs, to special needs adults and homeschooling groups.

I am a certified ThetaHealing practitioner, working toward certification in craniosacral unwinding, I’m practicing tuning fork and sound therapy and a practicing reiki master. In my spare time, I like to take long walks on the beach at Sands Point, garden with the kids, and rewild our front yard, by planting natural dyes and other “art supplies”.

MY CLASSES:
Classes will focus on the elements and principles of design, contemporary and historic artists and will have a movement and making art component. I ask that students know how to mute and unmute themselves, and stay muted as the default so that we don't get a lot of background noise. However, I still encourage questions! I just ask that students stay muted unless they have comments/questions. With no extra noises, every student will have the best experience possible.

Use the supplies you have or buy supplies and follow along. Your child is not required to ask questions, read passages or be a perfect artist. They can choose to participate as much or as little as they desire. None of my students are required to do anything more than listen - listening and watching is also very important and should be encouraged by parents. Coercing a child, taking over their work, getting involved beyond a loving awareness or forcing them to do the work is not advisable.

I am also very flexible with age ranges; if you feel your child would enjoy my class but is outside of the suggested age range, you are welcome to enroll, with the understanding that some concepts may indeed be above/below your child's level. there are no grades in my classes but I'm more than happy to assign a letter grade to their performance if it helps with your home curriculum or record keeping!
