Focusing on a different virtue each time, this class will help students develop what C.S. Lewis calls our “moral imagination” through stories and poems found in The Children’s Book of Virtues and/or The Children's Book of Heroes (Ed. by William J. Bennett). Students can join at any time, as no previous knowledge is necessary. Class time will be structured as follows: - Introduction to virtue of the day - Other background knowledge and/or vocabulary words for comprehension - Actively listen to story and/or poems read aloud with interactive questions - Discuss virtue displayed in the story

Students will learn the meaning of virtues such as courage, honesty, compassion, loyalty, perseverance, and responsibility through an interactive read-aloud and discussion time.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Welcome! Thank you for stopping by.
My name is Marlana Jackson, and I have enjoyed teaching for a long time!
I’ve also loved learning languages for longer than I can remember. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Spanish with a minor in French from Hillsdale College. I’ve also studied Latin and Hebrew as well as some Arabic, Polish, and Greek.
I hold a Texas teaching certification in Early Childhood-6th grade Core Subjects and ESL. My experiences learning foreign languages help make me a better ESL teacher, which I’ve done for 4 years with students from kindergarten through 10th grade at a public charter school. Recently, I started a French Club, which my students (and I!) greatly enjoyed. I am excited to share this fun Club here on Outschool!
I am also delighted to offer phonics and reading classes to help students become better readers! I have always loved reading, and it brings me great joy to help others learn to read and encounter that joy for the first time. Ever since I took my first education class on Explicit Phonics and Reading Instruction, I knew that I wanted to teach people how to read. I’ve attended several intensive phonics trainings for an Orton-Gillingham based phonics curriculum, and I enjoy using these methods to help learners read with accuracy, comprehension, and confidence.
I am excited to share the joy of reading and language learning with your student in class!
Please feel free to reach out with any questions or class requests you may have.
Hope to see you soon!
-- Ms. Jackson
