What's included
Homework
2-4 hours per week. Students will be reading and completing assignments independently in this Flex course. Since we do not meet live on a regular schedule, the onus is on the student to complete the work. Plan on having approximately 3 hours each week of independent Latin time.Assessment
Students can send me their written work at any time through Outschool (PDF or Word documents, please!) and I will offer corrections and comments. Students wishing for a letter grade at the end of the course should plan on taking a test, which I will provide, at the end of the course.Grading
includedClass Experience
This Flex class is for beginners, or for students wishing to review some Latin language foundations. In this course, students will read the first four chapters of Hans H. Orberg's Lingua Latina textbook as well as complete several exercises from the accompanying Exercitia Latina workbook. Upon enrolling in the course, students will have access to the Course Syllabus which contains the schedule of readings, workbook exercises, and accompanying video lessons. Throughout the course, students will have the option of sending written work to me directly if they would like corrections or feedback. Students can also feel free to discuss work in the Classroom with their classmates. Although students will read and translate independently, I will post two weekly videos with grammatical lessons, reading/translation strategies, and vocabulary-building tips to help students in their Latin-learning journeys. Each video will be approximately 15 minutes in length; the Welcome video will be a bit longer than the others. Outlined below are the topics included in each video. As needed, I will post additional videos to answer questions or make clarifications; these, should they arise, will not be listed in the syllabus and will be clearly marked in the classroom posting. I will be holding office hours weekly where students can drop in one at a time and ask questions or receive help with assignments. The ancient Romans kept slaves, and slaves are present as characters in this book series. The Romans were additionally a rather violent group (think: gladiator games were their sport of choice) and the naughty children in the book get beatings from their parents.

Hello! I’m Larissa Laver and I’ve been teaching since 2008. I’ve worked with young children through young adults over the years: I have taught Pre-K through collegiate level courses and literally every grade in between at some point in my career. I mainly have taught Latin language from elementary through advanced levels, and occasionally teach Ancient Greek as well. I also teach Ancient Greek and Roman History courses, Classical Mythology, and the Homeric Epics. I have traveled extensively in Greece and Italy, and what I learned on those adventures often finds its way into my lessons.
I consider myself a lifelong learner and am always digging deeper to discover more about the world we live in, its history, peoples, languages, religions, cuisines, and more! I also love when my students challenge me with their amazing questions and observations. I spend much time reading and researching in the hopes of being a better citizen of the world and educator.
When I'm not engaged in academic pursuits, I spend my time with my amazing husband. Together we love to travel, play tennis, and hang out with our pet chickens! When I'm on my own, I love kickboxing, yoga (sometimes outside with the chickens!), and gardening (also with the chickens).
