Light and Shadow Art: Creating a Shadowy Castle Using Chalk Pastels
Join this fun, five-week art course where students meet once a week to explore the magic of light and shadow! We'll practice key skills together, and students will apply what they've learned to create their own unique mysterious castle.

Intermediate Level
Get ready to embark on an artistic adventure! In this 5-week class, students will dive into the magical world of light, shadow, and mystery as they create their very own enchanted castle. We'll begin by mastering the fundamentals—exploring shapes, light, darkness, and shadow through fun and interactive lessons during the first two and a half lessons. As their skills grow, students will learn how to apply these techniques to bring their creations to life with 3D shapes. In the final weeks, students will channel their imagination and newfound expertise to craft their own mysterious castles, blending creativity and technique for a truly magical masterpiece!
Learning Goals
Light and Shadow:
Identify sources of light, describe the interaction of light with different materials, and infer the pathway of a light beam.
Shading Techniques
Students will learn and practice shading techniques that will be used in their project.

over 5 WeeksLesson 1:
Basic Shading Techniques
Students will learn about various techniques that will help them to create shade with a definite light source. Students will learn about the grayscale to practice hand pressure, as well as various other techniques they can use to create shade.

Lesson 2:
Point of Light Shading Techniques: How to create 3D Shapes
In this lesson we will be using some of the techniques that were previously used to create 3D shapes. Students will learn how to draw 3D shapes. Then they will use the techniques learned to create shadow from a light source.

Lesson 3:
Introduction of Project
Introduce students to art project: Light and Shadow Castle Art
In this lesson we will see examples of art that students have made in previous classes and we will discuss what we notice. We will learn how to draw a castle using various shapes that we have learned about in previous classes. Students will also begin to draw out their own castle, choosing where they want the light source to come from. We will discuss where the shadows will be and where the brightness will be.

In this lesson we will continue our discussion about light and shadows as I guide students in their own art creations.
