Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
I am happy to announce this 10-class Pre-Algebra course*, which will allow students to either be introduced or stay in practice with the concepts needed to build up their algebraic foundation.

To make maximum use of our time, instruction will be delivered synchronously via power point demonstrations, and asynchronously using self-created instructional videos, and providing materials such as notes and games/activities to further engage, motivate and support learners! I will be able to assess progress through our live interaction in class as well as through completion/submission of weekly assignments. Students will be strongly encouraged to participate during the lesson either using their microphones or the chat box- this will allow me the opportunity to provide feedback and any additional supports that may be needed. Class sizes will be kept small, so that students can receive the personalized instruction they need to be successful!

Using a standard Pre-Algebra textbook, along with numerous resources I have used in my 25 years of teaching, I will provide lessons on the following topics:

Class 1: Order of Operations
Class 2: Operations with Integers
Class 3: Solving One-Step Equations and Inequalities
Class 4: Rational Numbers involving Addition and Subtraction
Class 5: Rational Numbers involving Multiplication and Division
Class 6: Solving Two-Step and Multi-Step Equations and Inequalities
Class 7: Percent Proportions
Class 8: Probability and Statistics
Class 9: Applying Algebra to Geometry (finding missing angle measure and lengths of sides of right triangles)
Class 10: Square Roots, Pythagorean Theorem

This course would be ideal for students who have a basic knowledge of whole number operations (adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing) and are making a transition from elementary school level math to math on the middle school level. In addition, this class would also be appropriate for students taking Algebra 1 or Algebra 2 who may have gaps in their learning and need the review of skills in order to strengthen their knowledge base and close those gaps.

If an emergency causes me to miss a live session class, notification will be sent via Outschool messages. The lesson will be videotaped, and I will provide students with the link in order to watch the lesson on their own.

*If this class does not reach the minimum of 3 learners I may need to cancel. HOWEVER, I do have a 12-week FLEX version for this course, covering the same material (Hitting the Highlights- Pre-Algebra) that I will recommend and send the link upon cancelling.

Learning Goals

In this course, students will:

-develop problem solving skills in order to solver real-world problems
-develop number sense with integers and rational numbers
-expand their knowledge of exponents and square roots to simplify expressions
-use inverse operations to solve one-step, two-step, and multi-step equations and inequalities
-use the Least Common Multiple to add rational numbers and solve equations involving rational numbers
-use proportions to find the percent of a number
-use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the missing sides of a right triangles
-combine like terms in order to perform operations with polynomials

Supply List
Students should have a three-ring binder in order to keep track of assignments and notes each week. A calculator and graph paper would be nice items to have, however, when possible, I will suggest websites that may have the tools that a learner may need (example: online calculators).
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree in Education from University of Maryland, Baltimore County
I hold a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics as well as a Master's Degree in Education. With 20 years of experience teaching in the classroom coupled with 5 years of experience teaching online to students with varying abilities and needs, I feel extremely qualified to deliver this instruction to learners via Outschool. My love and dedication for Pre-Algebra stems from the knowledge that this is such a critical time for students to make the connections of elementary-level mathematics to higher-level thinking that will be key for success in courses such as Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry or Pre-Calculus (just to name a few).
